The Forest (f)or the Trees, or Silvas in Selvas: Arborial Imagery in Hispanic Literature
This essay expands upon a definition of the silva which is at once broader and more specific than the traditional sense in which it is normally understood: broader in the sense of not being limited to the silva métrica, and more specific because limited to poems (and stories) about trees. Beginning with Publius Papinius Statius and Francisco de Quevedo, then progressing through Antonio Machado and Vicente Aleixandre, and finally arriving at María…

Ambiguous Antidotes: Virtue as Vaccine for Vice in Early Modern Spain
Chastity and lust, charity and greed, humility and pride, are but some of the virtues and vices that have been in tension since Prudentius’ Psychomachia, written in the fifth century. While there has been widespread agreement within a given culture about what exactly constitutes a virtue or a vice, are these categories so consistent after all? In Ambiguous Antidotes, Hilaire Kallendorf explores the receptions of Virtues in the realm of moral phil…

A Companion to Early Modern Hispanic Theater
A panoramic, state-of-the-art handbook destined to chart a course for future work in the field of early modern Hispanic theater studies. It begins in the closet with an essay on Celestina as closet drama and moves out into the court to explore intersections with courtly love. An essay on the comedia and the classics demonstrates this genre's firm grounding in the classical tradition, despite Lope de Vega's famous protestations to the contrary. Di…

Sex(y) Summer Solstice
Many studies have compared Lope de Vega and Shakespeare, but none has juxtaposed their two plays about Midsummer's Night. This omission may in part be due to a difference in nomenclature regarding this festival. The essay begins with the festive context of Saint John's feast day and its ancient connections to fertility rituals. Both plays exploit these anthropological associations to develop the same theme, that of young women asserting the right…

A Myth Rejected: The Nobel Savage in Dominican Dystopia
This interdisciplinary study approximates the Columbian interpretation of the Taí nos - filtered and re-interpreted by the Dominican people, through their museums. Cultural phenomena such as vomitic spatulas, 'talking' idols, hallucinogens, infant cranial deformation, dances, nudity, sexual customs, punishments, and live burial produced Columbus's tendency to denounce the Taínos in his writings. These texts are displayed in the Museo del Hombre D…
Intertextual Madness in Hamlet: The Ghost's Fragmented Performativity
This essay establishes King James I's Daemonologie and Reginald Scot's Discouerie of Witchcraft as intertexts for Hamlet. It demonstrates how the diabolical linguistic register borrowed from these intertexts both heightens the verisimilitude of Hamlet's madness and expands the performative potential of the Ghost. Performativity has often been discussed as a theme for this play, but usually only in relation to Hamlet himself. This essay avoids the…

Adventures in Paradox: "Don Quixote" and the Western Tradition
The Diabolical Adventures of Don Quixote, or Self-Exorcism and the Rise of the Novel
This study explores Cervantes’ appropriations of the terminology and imagery of Catholic exorcists and demonologists in the Spanish Golden Age. The “lucid intervals” of Don Quixote, his constant sense that someone pursues him, and his explicit voicing of the words of the exorcism ritual can only be understood fully in relation to contemporaneous religious belief. This essay also argues that the devilishly-described Don Quixote exorcized himself. …

Tears in the Desert: Baroque Adaptations of the Book of Lamentations by John Donne and Francisco de Quevedo
Scholars have for decades compared many aspects of the poetry of two contemporaneous Baroque poets, John Donne (1572–1631) and Francisco de Quevedo (1580–1640). But, oddly, no one has compared their almost simultaneous adaptations of the Old Testament Book of Lamentations. Why would both poets independently, but writing at almost exactly the same time, choose this biblical text for poetic adaptation? What was it about the Book of Lamentations tha…
