Teaching and Learning in the Islamic West
The aim of the study is to highlight some characteristics of education during the Almohad, Marinid, and Naṣrid periods, taking into account to the influences exerted in the Andalusian educational system by the Marinids, especially with the establishment of the Andalusian madrasa. Part of the conclusions reached in this study is mainly based on the data offered by the Maghrebi hagiographic literature. The article provides new information on variou…
Collective Sufism in the Maghrib al-Aqṣā
This paper studies one of the most emblematic Maghrebi ribāṭ s (Ṣufī outposts, residences, and centers guidance) in the Islamic West as a prime manifestation of collective Sufism, both in terms of its seminal role in history, at least up until the Portuguese invasion of the Moroccan coasts in the fifteenth century, as well as the importance of its founder, Abū Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ (d. 631/1233), who also founded the ṭarīqa al-mājariyya , a dominant for…
Moroccan female saints in written and oral traditions
There are few studies on female saints in medieval Islam, due, among other reasons, to the lack of information in primary written sources, in particular hagiographic literature. In these sources, the role attributed to women is secondary compared to that of men, such that some women are mentioned simply because they are the saint’s daughter, sister, or wife. However, we are optimistic that research findings based on oral traditions related to fem…
Sanctity, Orality and Questions about Cultural and Religious Identity in North Morocco
This study presents some results from my fieldwork dealing with the female saints of the north Moroccan city of Alcazarquivir, which has been carried out between 2012 and 2014 in that village. The connections between orality and writing are more frequent as the educational level of the interviewee is higher; some of these informants raised roader issues regarding the evolution of the customs or the cult of saints. At the same time, it has been po…
Christians and Muslims Faced with the Wrath of Abū Marwān al-Yuḥānisī, a Thirteenth-Century “Friend of God
This article examines the nature of the wrath of Abū Marwān al-Yu[hdot]ānisī, a thirteenth-century Andalusi saint, and the protagonist of the Tuḥfat al-mughtarib of al-Qashtālī. I have divided the study into two main parts. The first sets out and analyses various occasions on which the saint committed violent acts against Christians. Two of them died as a consequence of these aggressions. All the cases in this first part took place in the Muslim …
The Andalusian Qadi in the Almoravid Period
Captives, Children and Conversion
Around 894/1488-89, a legal opinion on the case of a child living in the Naṣrid Kingdom of Granada, who came under the double threat of captivity and forced conversion to Christianity, was demanded by its father from jurists in Tlemcen. The text of this case is presented here and analysed from two points of view: the historical context of Muslim captives in Christian Spain, and the legal theory applied in the North African answer to the question …
