Levha-i Sıhhat: Geç Osmanlı Dönemi İstanbul’unda Tıbbi Bakımı Görselleştirmek
Bu makale 1890lı yılların başında Haseki Nisa Hastanesi’nde tedavi edilmiş yedi kadının portrelerini içeren ve bir kopyası Sultan Abdülhamid'e gönderilen bir fotoğraf albümü üstünden geç Osmanlı döneminde tıbbı bakımın nasıl görselleştirildiğini inceliyor. Albümdeki fotoğraflar hastalardan alınan urların patolojisini değil kadınların tekrardan sağlıklarına kavuşmuş olmasını vurgulamak için çekilmişler. Her portredeki ana unsur iyileşmekte olan bi…
Bureaucratic Portraiture and Practices of Citizenship
In lay and academic discourse, bureaucracy almost seems coterminous with the production and circulation of paper, writing, and type. Indeed, the flows of bureaucratic paperwork and documentation weigh heavy, but how are other media and material forms implicated in bureaucratic relationships and encounters? This Special Section considers the photographic portrait as an enduring bureaucratic technology across different histories and geographies. Ho…
Looking Together as Method: Encounters with Ottoman Armenian Expatriation Photographs
Between 1896 and 1908, over 4300 Ottoman Armenians emigrated abroad through terk-i tabiiyet, an expatriation process that required emigrants never return to the empire. A key step in this process was sitting for a photograph. Using Ottoman Armenian expatriation photographs as an example, this article details 'looking together' as a method for working ethnographically with photographs. It details three moments in time and three kinds of time to sh…
Classifying the Cartozians: Rethinking the politics of visibility alongside Ottoman subjecthood and American citizenship
Tatos Cartozian was naturalized in Portland, Oregon in May 1923, a decision that was immediately challenged on racial grounds. This article follows the Cartozian family - from their sitting for an Ottoman expatriation portrait to exit the Ottoman empire in 1906 to their deft use of advertising and portrait photography in the United States in order to rethink the politics of visibility and legal belonging. As several Asian groups were deemed ineli…

Bertillon, Ravachol and the Explosive Potential of Police Portraiture
Alphonse Bertillon’s system of identification has taken a place in the canon of photographic history ever since several key texts published in the 1980s demanded scholarly attention to repressive as well as honorific portraits. This article focuses on Bertillon’s most spectacular accomplishment, which resulted in the worldwide adoption of his techniques: the 1892 arrest and identification of the famed anarchist Ravachol. Ravachol’s identification…

Visualizing Publics: Digital Crowd Shots and the 2015 Unity Rally in Paris
The Unity Rally (Marché Republicaine) in Paris on January 11, 2015, organized in the aftermath of the deadly attacks on the satirical journal Charlie Hebdo, was a spectacle staged to produce images of unity after an act of terror itself triggered by the global circulation of injurious visuals. In this paper I analyze the Unity Rally as a case study of the production of a contemporary public not merely by the consumption of but also by the collect…
Image Brokers: Visualizing World News in the Age of Digital Circulation
How does a photograph become a news image? An ethnography of the labor behind international news images, this book ruptures the self-evidence of the journalistic photograph by revealing the many factors determining how news audiences are shown people, events, and the world. News images, this book argues, function as formative fictions—fictional insofar as these images are constructed and culturally mediated, and formative because their public pre…
Image Brokers: Visualizing World News in the Age of Digital Circulation
Image Brokers is an in-depth ethnography that reveals the labor and infrastructure behind news images and how they are circulated. Zeynep Devrim Gürsel presents an intimate look at the ways image brokers...the people who manage the distribution or restriction of images...construct and culturally mediate the images they circulate. Through this framework, news images become commodities that impact how politics and culture are visualized in the worl…

The politics of wire service photography: Infrastructures of representation in a digital newsroom
This article examines the politics of image brokering in the daily rituals of a major wire service's photography division. Specifically, it investigates crises of visualization: moments when routine visualization itself is challenged due to changes in infrastructures of representation. The transition to digital transmission has changed work of image brokers-people involved in the creation, validation, packaging, and circulation of images. New ima…
