Copper, crime, and the circular economy: How shadow flows threaten the green transition
Economic policy uncertainty and firm-level stock returns: Further evidence from China
This study investigates the effects of Global economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and Chinese EPU on yearly firm-level stock returns of 823 Chinese firms. The data is collected from www.policyuncertainty.com and the Thomson Reuters Eikon database. The findings indicate that increases in Chinese EPU have a negative effect on firm-level stock returns, while Global EPU has a positive impact. Interestingly, the negative effect is more pronounced in hig…
Information technology and outbound tourism: A cross-country analysis
This article provides a comprehensive investigation of the global tourism industry, combining two critical streams from the academic literature: the economic determinants of the tourism industry and the influence of technology on this industry. More precisely, this study examines the influences of technology advancement (Internet and mobile usage) on the outbound tourism (OT) in a global sample. We found interesting and consistent results by appl…
Burden of disease scenarios for 204 countries and territories, 2022–2050: A forecasting analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021
BACKGROUND: Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternativ…
Global burden and strength of evidence for 88 risk factors in 204 countries and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021
BACKGROUND: Understanding the health consequences associated with exposure to risk factors is necessary to inform public health policy and practice. To systematically quantify the contributions of risk factor exposures to specific health outcomes, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 aims to provide comprehensive estimates of exposure levels, relative health risks, and attributable burden of disease for 88 ri…
How do countries deal with global uncertainty? Domestic ability to absorb shock through the lens of the economic complexity and export diversification
The Performativity of Algorithmic Trading: The Epistemology of Flash Crashes
In Science and Technology Studies, performativity has been debated and used to question economic governance, the role of explicitness, the creation of signification and the enactment of theories, investigating the influence of language on social reality. Based on Wittgenstein’s concept of language game, we explain that even if algorithms were designed, induced and justified by a particular rational language (theoretical framework), their implemen…

Shaping success through creative failure: A historical sensemaking analysis of the computerisation of the UK financial market
This article draws on the concept of sensemaking and sensegiving to examine how the failure of a project, TAURUS, influenced the successful development of an innovative security settlement system, CREST, which has shaped the computerisation of the wholesale UK financial industry. We use a historiographic interpretative approach to analyse publicly available documents, via three theoretical constructs that have emerged from combining business hist…
Determinants of agricultural emissions: Panel data evidence from a global sample
Using the panel data of 89 economies from 1995–2012, this study examines the major drivers of agricultural emissions while considering affluence, energy intensity, agriculture value added and economic integration. We find long-run cointegration among the variables. Furthermore, our empirical results based on a dynamic fixed effects autoregressive distributed lag model show that the increases in income and economic integration – proxied by trade a…
Economic policy uncertainty and demand for international tourism: An empirical study
The sensitivity of countries to the global macroeconomic uncertainty is directly related to the income level affecting, therefore, the demand for the outbound international tourism. Precisely, we observe that a higher economic policy uncertainty leads to more departures and more total expenditures but less expenditure per tourist – this finding is the first contribution of this article since it suggests that outbound tourism might be considered a…
Effects of the internet, mobile, and land phones on income inequality and The Kuznets curve: Cross country analysis
Institutions, economic openness and credit cycles: An international evidence
This study aims at investigating the influence of institutions and economic openness on credit cycles in a global sample. Six institutional quality indicators combined with net inward FDI and trade openness are collected to estimate, respectively, the effects of institutions and economic openness on credit cycles. Our panel data covers 60 economies, including 32 low-and middle-income economies (LMEs) and 28 high-income economies (HIEs), the data …
Impact of foreign direct investment, trade openness and economic institutions on growth in emerging countries: The case of Vietnam
This article investigates the role of economic institutions and economic openness in the growth of a specific emerging economy -Vietnam. The data from Vietnamese 63 provinces in the period of 2005-2015 have been collected to examine the influences of institutional quality on the inward FDI, trade and growth. By employing the system GMM estimators, our main findings show that, first, the combined effect of inward FDI with trade openness has a subs…
For the love of green: Between ecology and dollars
This article reviews how corporate social responsibility, in particular its environmental practices, is being mobilised in practice by companies. We discuss that the current engagement with the Anthropocene is more a marketing argument supporting a capitalist discourse, rather than an ethical approach towards business. Thus, we call for a more sustainable approach in corporate social responsibility, not as a communication tool, but as a genuine r…
The Emergence of Econophysics: A New Approach in Modern Financial Theory
Financial economics and mathematical finance are the two traditional scientific disciplines that constitute modern financial theory. Although they still largely dominate modern financial theory, in the past few years a new "player" has increasingly been making itself felt and could lead to a rethinking of some of the theoretical foundations of modern financial theory. This new player is econophysics. Econophysics is a very recent movement that is…
When Physicists Invade Economics
The reasons for the lack of communication between economists and econophysicists are clarified by giving an outline of the methodological differences between economics and econophysics, which has emerged as a new field of research over the last decade. Theorists working in econophysics see economic and financial phenomena through the ‘lens’ of statistical physics. So far, there has been no real dialogue between economists and econophysicists beca…
The Art of Finance: An Artist Uses Financial Economics as Inspiration
This article focuses on the possibility of developing an “art of science” in the literal sense of the words—that is, art illustrating scientific theories. In this perspective, scientific knowledge is used for itself, independent of the reality it is supposed to represent (even if this knowledge does not directly involve a pictorial dimension). Using a specific theory originating from financial economics, the author illustrates his analysis using …
