  • Cultural Ecology of an Agricultural Implement in Carpathian Europe

    Open Access•Béla Gunda•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Europaea•1992

In his article the author presents an important agricultural implement of Carpathian Europe: the hayrakes. From typological view these are almost identical with the hayrakes of Western Europe. They are not only used as tools, but fulfill a social function as well. Decorative and "rattling" rakes are eventually used as gifts. The women will guard their decorated rake lifelong. Among the Hungarians a rake is carved on the grave-post of a woman dist…

    John Clammer, John R Clammer et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1980•References: 6

Each for different reasons, depending on the dominant theories of their disciplines, anthropologists, engineers, and economists have not paid sufficient coordinated attention to the technical knowledge found in local populations, different from the technology and the processes of social change that have been institutionalized by the capitalist system of production although not necessarily independent of them. In this paper we reconsider some conc…

    Béla Gunda•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•1973

SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY, FOLKLORE, AND LINGUISTICS are disciples interested in semiotic research work. Béla Gunda, Bila Gunda•ARTICLE•Folklore•1970

IN economic anthropology herding is still of considerable importance in the Great Hungarian Plain. Numerous herds of cattle and horses and flocks of sheep are watched by the herdsmen on the vast pastures. The instruments of watching are the stick and the whip, but an important role is played by the dogs too. Some decades ago, however, the herdsmen availed themselves of various magical acts too in order to watch their herds. These acts are still r…

  • America in Hungarian Folk Tradition

    Béla Gunda•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•1970

DURING THE PAST eighty or one hundred years a very large number of Hungarian, Polish, Slovakian, and Ukrainian peasants have migrated to the New World. The mass migration was directed primarily toward the United States, and later to Canada and South America; it ceased essentially only after World War II. The main reason for migration is found in the hard economic situation of Central Europe as contrasted with the unlimited economic and social opp…
