Jennifer Pike, Jennifer L Pike et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1997

OBJECTIVE: Life stress is hypothesized to alter the dynamic regulation of the autonomic, neuroendocrine, and immune systems. This study examined the effects of antecedent chronic life stress on psychological and physiological responsivity after acute challenge with a psychological stressor. METHOD: Using a within-subject mixed design, male volunteers with (N = 12) and without chronic life stress (N = 11) were administered a 12-minute laboratory s…

  • Emigration Stress and Langltage Proficiency as Correlates of Depression in a Sample of Southeast Asian Refugees

    Open Access•Perry M Nicassio, Gary S Solomon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•1986

This research evaluated a stress management, coping skills model of adjustment in the analysis of depression in a sample of Laotian refugees living in the southeastern United States. Stressful events and experiences during emigration and a lack of English proficiency were associated with depressive symptoms, while demographic variables and social support were not. English proficiency also significantly reduced the impact of acculturative stressor…

    Open Access•Perry M Nicassio•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1985•Cited by: 14•References: 32

This article summarizes the clinical and research literature on the psychosocial adjustment of the Southeast Asian refugees in the United States and proposes the adoption of theoretical models that may be helpful in explaining individual differences in adjustment processes. • Psychosocial Correlates of Alienation

    Open Access•Perry M Nicassio•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1983•Cited by: 19•References: 18

The major purpose of this investigation was to study the relationship between several measures of psychosocial adjustment and social alienation in a sample of Indochinese refugees residing in the United States. Based on interviews with 460 Indochinese heads of households, the results indicated that alienation was negatively related to socioeconomic status, English proficiency, the number of American acquaintances and friends, and refugees' self-p…

  • Progressive relaxation, EMG biofeedback and biofeedback placebo in the treatment of sleep‐onset insomnia

    Open Access•Perry M Nicassio, Marlene B Boylan et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1982

This paper describes a study in which progressive relaxation, EMG frontalis biofeedback, and a biofeedback placebo manipulation were compared in the treatment of severe insomnia with 40 chronically sleep‐disturbed adult patients. Progressive relaxation and EMG biofeedback led to significant reductions in both reported sleep‐onset latency and depressive symptomatology. However, when compared individually with the biofeedback placebo group, neither…

  • The power of suggestion

Richard R Bootzin, C Peter Herman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1976•Cited by: 6

This experiment was conducted in an attempt to replicate and delimit the reverse placebo effect found by Storms and Nisbett in insomniacs. It was predicted that the reverse placebo effect would obtain when the pills' effects were described as affecting arousal (as in Storms and Nisbett's study) but that a direct suggestion effect would result when the pills were described as directly affecting sleep onset latency. Results indicated that direct su…
