Geomorphological Context and Weathering Processes of the Rock Art Shelters of La Tunita (Sierra de Ancasti, Northwest Argentina)
This study analyzes the geomorphological context, weathering processes, and evolution of granitic shelters bearing rock art in the Parque Arqueológico Provincial La Tunita (Sierra de Ancasti, Northwest Argentina), a key repository of Aguada Culture pictographs ( ca . 600–900 AD). The research pursued four main objectives: (i) to characterize the spatial location and geomorphological setting of the principal shelters; (ii) to generate a three‐dime…
Asociaciones fitolíticas de los contextos geoarqueológicos de La Costa 2 (valle de Tafí, Argentina)
This study characterizes the phytolith assemblages of three pedostratigraphic profiles from the La Costa 2 site (Tafí del Valle, Tucumán) to assess the anthropic and natural processes that affected the agricultural terraces during the late Holocene. An analysis of the profiles allowed us to identify differences between those sectors with evidence of human activity and a control profile, providing with a first quantitative approximation to the loc…
Aproximación al conocimiento de las estructuras de almacenaje en el asentamiento semiurbano de la Antigua Ciudad de Quilmes (Tucumán-Argentina)
The role of storage strategies throughout history is unquestionable. The old city of Quilmes offers features that indicate a possible emphasis placed on the construction of structures oriented to that end. The objectives of this research are: (1) to carry out the first systematic survey of the semi-urban system of the Old City of Quilmes; (2) differentiate between structures of diverse function through morphological clues; (3) identify and record…
Geological and Geomorphological Context and Characterization of Constructive Materials from the Iberian–Roman Archaeological Site at La Vispesa (NE Spain)
La Vispesa is an archaeological settlement occupied from the First Iron Age to the Imperial Roman Period. The objectives of this study were to (i) perform a geomorphological characterization of the site; (ii) place it in its regional context; (iii) obtain values of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) to characterize the construction materials; (iv) assess the chronological data obtained; (v) establish the origin of the sandstones used; and (vi) a…
Ethnobotanical knowledge of two Indian communities in the Monte Desert
Background: The contributions of ethnobotany are essential for understanding the relationship of local communities with their environment and, therefore, for planning effective conservation and management measures. In this paper, we present the results of the first quantitative approach to the ethnobotany of Indian communities of the Santa María valley, a semiarid region in Tucumán province (Argentina) with marked signs of environmental degradati…
Distribución de fragmentos cerámicos prehispánicos en abanicos aluviales de regiones áridas del noroeste argentino (valle de yocavil)
In this article we examine the effects of surficial runoff on the visibility, preservation and spatial distribution of pre-Hispanic pottery sherds (ca. 100-1.535 a.C.) in alluvial fans of the Sierra de Quilmes (Northwest of Argentina) to evaluate the validity of spatial patterns of occupation based in part on them. Archaeological surveys across the slope-foothill-bottom of the valley with surface collection and pits were made. Archaeological plac…

Evolutionary model and palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the La Codera archaeological complex (Ebro Basin, NE Spain)
Morphosedimentary and geoarchaeological records during the last 1400 years in the Ebro depression (NE Spain) and their paleoenvironmental interpretation
Most studies on the geomorphological evolution of the Holocene from the Ebro depression (NE Spain) are focused on the period up to the Roman Epoch (218 BC–476 AD) while some references to medieval (476 AD–15th century) deposits are also occasionally dated. This paper focuses on the establishment of aggradation units on the valley bottoms and slopes of the Ebro depression after 1400 BP, their origin, comparison with other areas, and relationship w…
Geomorphological, chronological, and paleoenvironmental context of the Mousterian site at Roca San Miguel (Arén, Huesca, Spain) from the penultimate to the last glacial cycle
The Roca San Miguel (RSM) archaeological site was occupied during Mousterian times. Here we present a geoarchaeological and paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the site. Five stratigraphic units (A to E) formed by different archaeological levels are identified. Three optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages show that Unit A dates to between 169.6 ± 9.1 and 151.9 ± 11.1 ka, during the penultimate glacial period (PGP), and contains numerous si…
Structure, evolutionary context and chronological data of the Monforte de Moyuela Roman dam (Ebro Basin, NE of Spain)
The Monforte de Moyuela dam, also known as Ermita de la Virgen del Pilar dam, is a Roman reservoir built on a tributary of the Aguasvivas River (Ebro basin, Spain). A multidisciplinary study has been carried out to investigate this kind of Roman water infrastructure. It is the fifth‐highest dam (16.8 m) in the Iberian Peninsula and the seventh in the Roman Empire. The initial dam was built ca. 100 B.C.–10 A.D., probably in the period of Augustus,…

Application of 2D/3D models and alteration mapping for detecting deterioration processes in rock art heritage (Cerro Colorado, Argentina)
Sandstone weathering processes in the painted rock shelters of Cerro Colorado (Córdoba, Argentina)
Tafoni, produced by physicochemical weathering of sandstones, are abundant in the Cerro Colorado (Córdoba province, Argentina). Many of the rock shelters are decorated with rock art of high heritage significance. This art belongs to semisedentary communities from the Late Prehispanic Period (ca. 1550–350 AP). They include morphologies inherited from more humid ancient climates combined with current weathering processes. Evolutionary relief study …

Mother Earth
The objective of this paper is to explore the relationship between agricultural soils, land and cult behaviour. We consider that soils, as they were modified by humans, contain key information for the reconstruction of past behaviour linked to super-structural beliefs, not necessarily visible through the conventional material record. In this sense, the manipulation of lands and soils in the Andean region represents the unification of ritual activ…

Paleoenvironmental and geoarchaeological reconstruction from late Holocene slope records (Lower Huerva Valley, Ebro Basin, NE Spain)
Slope deposits in semiarid regions are known to be very sensitive environments, especially those that occurred during the minor fluctuations of the late Holocene. In this paper we analyse Holocene colluvium genesis, composition, and paleoenvironmental meaning through the study of slope deposits in NE Spain. Two cumulative slope stages are described during this period. In the study area, both slope accumulations are superimposed and this has enabl…
