Is Critias a Sophist
The coherence and indeed the reality of the sophists as a philosophical school or movement has been contested and debated in modern scholarship, with inconclusive results. While their collective identity, not to mention their exemplarity, is subject to probing scrutiny, we usually have a fairly good idea of which historical figures we mean when we speak of the sophists. However, the case of Critias, the most infamous of the Thirty Tyrants of Athe…

Humanism and the Untimely Reformation
This essay examines the tension between humanism and Reformation concerning the ethic of timing espoused by Erasmus and his fellow humanists. In the course of the sixteenth century, the humanist ideal of the man for all seasons becomes the reformers' nemesis, the temporizer or confessional chameleon. We will trace this topos from Erasmus' adages to Montaigne's essays in order to see how humanism carries within it the seeds of counter-Reformation …

Montaigne and the Theatre of Conscience
This article proposes a new reading of Montaigne's essay 'De la gloire' in the context of Ciceronian moral philosophy and in reference to Cicero's metaphor of the theatre of conscience. His essay explores the tension between the ethical ideal of the primacy of individual conscience and the demoralizing reality of the need for external sanctions to enforce moral and religious norms. This tension leads Montaigne to a candidly irreligious considerat…

The Plot of History from Antiquity to the Renaissance
In the Poetics Aristotle introduced the notion of plot or mythos as a distinctly poetic form of rationality and coherence absent from history. In the course of antiquity and the Renaissance Aristotle's notion of plot underwent a curious inversion by which history came to supplant poetry as the main literary form of emplotment. To account for the readjustment or even reversal of Aristotle's distinction between history and poetry, we will examine t…
