  • Extreme Exoticism

    Richard E Mueller•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2021

    W. Anthony Sheppard’s book Extreme Exoticism is a rich, encyclopedic account of influences on American creative artists from the moment when Commodore Perry’s gunboat diplomacy “opened” Japan to the wider world in 1854 through the ever-increasing absorption of Japanese music by composers in the United States after the turn of the twenty-first century. In his introduction he explains that “extreme exoticism” refers to the “extreme” foreignness of …

  • Information and Communication Technology Talent

Ross Finnie, Richard E Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2018•Referencias: 10

This article provides a conceptual framework for discussing information and communication technology (ICT) skills shortages in a context in which having a sufficient supply of skilled ICT workers—both inside the ICT sector and more broadly—is critical to the performance of the Canadian economy. We start with an outline of a simple model of how ICT skills shortages might be manifested in labour market signals, such as rising wages, and then how, i…

  • Underrepresentation of Women in Canada’s Information and Communication Technology Sector

    Richard E Mueller, N T Khuong Truong et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

The proportion of women in Canada’s information and communication technology (ICT) sector is well below their proportion in other fields. One hypothesis for this phenomenon is that women may not have the “right stuff” to be heavily involved in ICT. We use basic ICT scores derived from Statistics Canada’s 2012 Survey of Adult Skills, which is the Canadian portion of the 2012 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Programme for the …

  • Mexican Immigrants and Temporary Residents in Canada

    Open Access•Richard E Mueller•ARTICLE•Migraciones internacionales•2017

The migration of Mexicans to Canada is a new phenomenon, but it represents one of the most significant increases in the movement of people from Latin America. Since the mid-1990s, the number of Mexicans in Canada has been growing rapidly because of the return of the descendants of Canadian Mennonites who emigrated to Mexico and the provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which eases the entrance requirements for Mexican nat…

    Gary L Hunt, Richard E Mueller•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2013•Referencias: 4

  • North American Migration

Gary L Hunt, Richard E Mueller•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2004

Utilizing a utility-maximizing, Roy-type, discrete choice model of worker location in Canadian provinces and U.S. states that incorporates returns to skill, amenities, fixed costs, distance, language, and border effects, we find that individuals with higher skills migrate to areas with higher returns and that the 49th parallel attenuates migration. Simulations indicate that equalizing returns in the two countries has a modest effect on cross-coun…

  • Changes in the Quality of Immigrant Flows between the United States and Canada in the 1980s

    Richard E Mueller•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•1999

Introduction and Background It is well known that individuals will desire to migrate to the location where returns to their abilities are the highest, other things equal. An important theoretical factor in determining these returns is the relative distribution of earnings in the source and host countries. If the earnings variance in the country of origin is less than that in the country of destination (assuming that the correlation in earnings ac…
