In contemporary discourse, context matters for how people converse with one another about political topics. Discussion may occur face-to-face or online, topics of conversation may be controversial or less so, and gender dynamics may vary. We argue that men and women are affected differently by various contextual discussion factors. We employ a unique quasi-experiment that varies these factors and uses discourse analysis to examine patterns of gen…

  • Who dominates the conversation? The effect of gender, discussion medium, and controversy on political discussion

    Mary Herring, Jennie Sweet-Cushman et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 30

Previous research finds that when citizens discuss political topics, men tend to predominate. In this study, we investigate how discussion of political issues changes in different settings, using a design in which male and female participants discussed two political topics—one controversial, the other not—in in a variety of settings. We examine two aspects of discussion: the extent of participation and the style of participation. We find that wom…

Although group identity has been the focus of much debate, there is little agreement as to its meaning. We use a particular theory of group cohesion-social identity theory-to develop testable hypotheses about the structure of African-American group identity. After relating the elements of this theory to the identity debate, we employ a national sample of African-Americans to examine whether the structure of group identity conforms to theoretical …

  • A Model of Lottery Participation

    Open Access•Mary Herring, Timothy Bledsoe•ARTICLE•Policy Studies Journal•1994•Cited by: 8•References: 13

With the spread of state–sponsored lotteries to all but 17 states, it is important to understand the circumstances and perspectives of those who contribute to lottery revenues. A multivariate model of percent of income spent on lottery tickets indicates that participation is a declining function of income and education, and that it is higher among black, male, and older respondents. In addition, participation is affected by the social context of …

  • Legislative Responsiveness to Black Constituents in Three Deep South States

    Mary Herring•ARTICLE•The Journal of Politics•1990•Cited by: 27•References: 17

Studies of legislative responsiveness to black constituents which have been based on Congressional roll calls have consistently found no relationship between the black proportion of the constituency and various measures of responsiveness. This paper examines the roll-call voting behavior of state senators in Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana on three areas of interest to blacks: redistributive issues, civil rights and liberties, and issues with an …

Women have long faced special barriers in their efforts to gain election to political office. We show that the hurdles women encounter go beyond the often-described familial responsibilities and occupational disadvantages to include perceptual and political barriers unique to women. Using a two-wave, five-year panel of people serving on city councils, we find women likely to pursue higher office only under particular conditions-conditions that se…
