Between Empire and Globalization: An Economic History of Modern Spain
Non-Residential Capital Stock in Latin America, 1875-2008: New Estimates and International Comparisons
We use a homogeneous method to estimate non-residential capital stock for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. Our estimates extend back to the late-nineteenth century, 50 years earlier than the present available estimates. Our estimates use the gross fixed capital formation data base (1850–1950). These data are linked with existing standardised national accounts for the region, such as those of Economic Commission for Latin America and the Cari…
Capital formation in Latin America: One and a half century of macroeconomic dynamics
Macroeconomic studies indicate that physical capital formation has played a pivotal role in long-term economic growth. These studies have been hampered, however, by a data constraint: in order to pinpoint exactly what the role of capital formation has been, a larger empirical database –larger in terms of both the time span and the geographical area covered– is needed. This study addresses that problem by providing new and very extensive series on…
Latin America participated in the electric revolution which profoundly transformed the most developed Western economies between 1880 and 1930. The qualitative empirical evidence shows that Latin American electrification began with little delay compared to those economies. This article provides new quantitative evidence consisting of annual series about a reliable indicator of the degree of electrification of the Latin American nations. The databa…
Capital Formation in Machinery in Latin America, 1890-1930
Investment in machinery is a key component in the analysis of long-term economic growth during the spread of industrialization. This article offers consistent annual series on the magnitude of machinery imports per capita into all Latin American countries for the period 1890-1930. Analysis of these series shows that machinery imports diverged across countries from 1890 through 1913. After 1913 a number of the more backward countries experienced r…
On the Origins of ISI: The Latin American Cement Industry, 1900-30
This article explores the achievements of industrialisation in Latin America in the period before 1930, the date traditionally considered to be the start of the ISI process. It analyses the development of a basic industrial sector, the cement industry, which was driven by a natural substitution of imports. It quantifies the expansion of demand in each of the countries in the region, and then moves on to consider the growth of the industry in Lati…
