Ethical Correlates of Family Control
We examine and test the environmental performance of family firms across 22 European countries and find that they exhibit better environmental performance than nonfamily firms. This result confirms prior research conducted in the United States. More specifically, we conclude that family firms engage in more substantive environmental actions than nonfamily firms. Furthermore, we hypothesize and confirm that family firms do not pay a financial pric…
Are narcissistic CEOs good or bad for family firm innovation
Despite anecdotal evidence showing that some CEOs possess narcissistic personality traits, research on this individual characteristic is still lagging behind. Though the literature has established that narcissistic CEO traits may affect firm performance, it is not clear whether they act as constructive or destructing forces in family firms. This is particularly important given family firms’ attention towards the preservation of socioemotional wea…

Reward Systems
Reward systems are central to the Human Resource Management function. Their purpose is to attract talented individuals, motivate them, and retain those that have a better fit with the organization. Reward systems have a direct impact (and in most firms the most important one) on the cost side of the organization's financial statement. They are strategic as they influence people's attitudes, behavior, and performance. In this chapter we provide an…
Necessity as the mother of ‘green’ inventions
Drawing on institutional theory and innovation literature, we argue that greater regulatory and normative pressures concerning environmental issues positively influence companies' propensity to engage in environmental innovation. Analysis of environment‐related patents of 326 publicly traded firms from polluting industries in the United States suggests that institutional pressures can trigger such innovation, especially in those firms displaying …
Socioemotional Wealth in Family Firms
This article makes the case for the socioemotional wealth (SEW) approach as the potential dominant paradigm in the family business field. The authors argue that SEW is the most important differentiator of the family firm as a unique entity and, as such, helps explain why family firms behave distinctively. In doing so, the authors review the concept of SEW, its different dimensions, and its links with other theoretical approaches. The authors also…
Socioemotional Wealth and Proactive Stakeholder Engagement
While family business research has prominently recognized that family firms are motivated by nonfinancial factors, the literature has remained relatively silent about whether or not these firms are more likely than others to engage actively with their stakeholders, who often have nonpecuniary demands. This paper argues that family firms are more prone to adopt proactive stakeholder engagement (PSE) activities because by doing so they preserve and…
Environmental Performance and Executive Compensation
Relying on institutional theory, agency rationale, and environmental management research, we hypothesize that, in polluting industries, good environmental performance increases CEO pay; that environmental governance mechanisms strengthen this linkage; that pollution prevention strategies affect executive compensation more than end-of-pipe pollution control; and that long-term pay increases pollution prevention success. Using longitudinal data on …

Exploring the Dimensions of an International Social Issues Climate
While progress has been made in integrating many social issues concepts, empirical research testing these concepts remains limited. This paper examines four research questions posed from an open systems perspective about issues climate dynamics. These questions guided survey research with managers within 102 organizations to explore their perceptions of 40 issues active in the Caribbean Basin. The research supports the usability of the issue life…
