Case study of a rare occipital osteoma related to cranial trauma
century coastal foraging society in California. His remains display a large ectocranial elevation on the occipital, measuring 23.3 mm anteroposteriorly, 25.3 mm mediolaterally, and is elevated to 20.1 mm. It is located along the superior nuchal line on the left side of the occipital and represents an extremely rare occipital localization of a particular type of trauma-related osteoma. In our prior study of Burial 280, trauma etiology was not cons…
Enigmatic Cranial Superstructures among Chamorro Ancestors from the Mariana Islands
Sublime expression of three ectocranial occipital superstructures (OSSs)—occipital torus tubercles (TOTs), retromastoid processes (PRs), and posterior supramastoid tubercles (TSPs)—is virtually restricted to Oceania, with epicenters in the Mariana Islands, Tonga, Mocha Island, and perhaps other Oceanic locales such as the West Sepik Coast of New Guinea. Enigmatic in etiology, OSSs are anatomically related to entheses for the trapezius, superior o…

Characterization of gout in a skeletal population sample
Characterization of the nature and skeletal distribution of gout was accomplished in a Chamoru (Chamorros) population with predilection to the disease. Uniform excavation by the gouty diathesis produces a punched‐out appearance to these predominantly monarticular lesions. The lesion is distinct from that seen in rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, or infection. Reactive new bone formation in some gouty lesions also has an apparently unique…
Population history reconstruction, based on craniometry I. The backtracking approach and initial results
Patterns of Activity-Induced Pathology in a Canadian Inuit Population, by Charles F. Merbs
Multiple observers, humidity, and choice of precision statistics
This study investigates three topics: (1) interobserver measurement error in craniometry, (2) the effects of humidity on craniometric measurements, and (3) the current status of estimators of measurement precision in craniometry and anthropometry. The results of the three‐observer error analysis based on 24 linear measurements taken on 47 crania indicate that minor idiosyncratic variations in measurement technique can lead to high levels of stati…

The prevalence of cleft uvula in an inuit population
The prevalence of cleft uvula, a palatal cleft microformation, is reported for an Inuit population. The etiology of this congenital anomaly is discussed and cross‐populational frequencies inventoried. Since cleft uvula frequencies are ordinarily high in East Asian and East‐Asian‐derived populations, factors accounting for some relatively low Inuit prevalences are suggested
