Resilience in Palestinian adolescents living in Gaza
These findings indicate that older age, optimism, perception of family seeing the world as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful, stronger Arab ethnic identity, greater self-regulation and stronger coping skills promote adolescent adaptation and health. Salutogenesis frames information about how resilient youth living in high threat environments may respond to preventative community-based behavioral health interventions as well as treatment …
Polygyny and Post-nomadism among the Bedouin in Israel
The continuing practice of polygynous marriage on the part of the Bedouin of the Negev in Israel is generally seen as resistance to modernity for the sake of maintaining semi-nomadic ways of life. Behavior Problems in Bedouin Elementary Schoolchildren
Emotional and behavior problems in Bedouin elementary schoolchildren were investigated. Teachers completed the Teachers' Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist on 953 children: 461 children who had previously been rated by teachers as having referral level behavioral and/or learning problems and 492 children rated as non-problematic by their teachers. There were significant differences between these two groups on total behavior problem score…

Identity Formation in the Shadow of Conflict: Projective Drawings by Palestinian and Israeli Arab Children from the West Bank and Gaza
Social identity is thought to be the means through which individuals understand themselves in their social context. Understanding the processes of identity formation in the context of intergroup conflict is particularly important, since social identity is critical to understanding how people act. Social identity, though, has been a difficult process to study since it is a purely internal construct. In this study, we argue that free-form drawings …
Adolescent Intimacy: A Cross-Cultural Study
This study examined and compared perceptions of intimacy in friendships among Israeli Jewish and Israeli Bedouin adolescents. Questionnaires assessing perceived intimacy and self-disclosure in close friendships were completed by 288 Jewish and 327 Bedouin 7th-, 9th-, and 11th-grade students. Overall, results showed that intimacy was perceived to reflect a balance between closeness and individuality in close friendships. Yet Jewish and Bedouin ado…
