  • The pandemic did not interrupt LA’s violence interrupters

Open Access•Jiaoying Ren, Karina Santoso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aggression Conflict…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Purpose The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on crime has been highly variable. One possible source of variation runs indirectly through the impact that the pandemic had on groups tasked with preventing and responding to crime. Here, this paper aims to examine the impact of the pandemic on the activities undertaken by front-line workers in the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD). Design/methodology/app…

  • East African Railways and Harbours, 1945–1960

    Open Access•David Hyde•CHAPTER•Local Subversions of Colonial…•2016

Weak infrastructure, a low level of development and 'underdevelopment' generally can and does inhibit the metamorphosis of the commodity form within peripheral sites of production. Anti-commodity tendencies can also be manifest as 'the commons' refusing commodification, or as goods and resources destined for commodification but which resist the full evolution into the commodity form. This is deeply symptomatic of crisis and breakdown.KeywordsRoad…

  • The East African Railway Strike, 1959-60

    David Hyde•ARTICLE•Labor History•2016•References: 10

The crisis of accumulation which tore East African Railways and Harbours (E.A.R.H.) provoked fierce resistance from African railwaymen in all three colonies. This was marked by the East African Railway Strike which began on 14 November 1959, as the majority of railwaymen stopped work in response to the Railway African Union [Kenya] call for a colony wide strike. Railwaymen in Tanganyika and Uganda followed them into action to mark the region’s fi…

  • The Impact of Microenvironments on Socioeconomic Organization in the Maya Lowlands

    David Hyde, David G Hyde•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2012•References: 18

The Maya Lowlands are a diverse physiographic landscape comprised of multiple microenvironments. In the Late Classic, it is believed that land-use specific communities evolved in less optimal localities creating dependency relationships between sites. In this article I present the results of the lithic analysis from three Minimal Ceremonial Centers in Northwestern Belize, concluding that the lithic technological organization reflects localized re…

  • Undercurrents to independence

    David Hyde•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 5

The avalanche of plantation strikes which took place during early months of 1960 initiated the successive strike waves which plagued Kenya’s decolonisation process. The lifting of the Emergency and the announcement of a transition period to African majority government in January 1960 was marked by a new confidence. After years of draconian discipline, estate workers embraced trade unionism and moved into their first organised struggles over wages…

  • Paying for the Emergency by displacing the settlers’

    Open Access•David Hyde•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 6

Global coffee markets entered into a deep cyclical downturn from the mid 1950s. As producers, notably Brazil and Colombia, continued to increase their output, intense struggles arose among global competitors for larger slices of a contracting market. The prospect of an economic catastrophe, following the release of Brazil's surplus stocks, preoccupied Kenya's colonial government, which was dependent on tax revenues derived from coffee sales, and …
