African Population and Capitalism: Historical Perspectives
Hoe and Wage: A Social History of a Circular Migration System in West Africa
Based on an unusual source a retrospective survey of migration from 1900 to 1975 this book traces the history of internal and international labor migration in colonial and contemporary Burkina Faso, the West African coast, and other parts of Africa. Interviews with returned migrants elicited information about age, matrimonial status, motives for migrating, employment, destinations, residence, and motives for returning. The survey, which includes …
Interdependence and Convergence: Migration, Men, Women, and Work in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1800–1975
This chapter examines migration of women and men in sub-Saharan Africa since 1800. It also analyzes how their forms of mobility related to each other, and how they were intertwined with work and social reproduction in different and complex ways. The premise of the chapter is that relationships between gender and migration (or non-migration) grow out of the internal dynamics of households and societies, just as they are also shaped by external inf…

Muslim ballot box barbeque”: Muslim and national identities among Nigerian and Indian immigrants in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas after September 11
The attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York City profoundly affected Muslims in the United States. Set against national and regional demographic profiles of the Muslim population, this article analyzes its impact on a dozen Indian and Nigerian Muslim immigrants in Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW). Interviewed in an NSF study, they expressed serious concerns about discrimination and even their physical safety after the attacks. They remain both faithful …

Hoe and Wage: A Social History of a Circular Migration System in West Africa
African Historical Demography in the Years since Edinburgh
The study of African demography, unlike the study of populations in Europe, North America, and even Asia, has been remarkably ahistorical. The absence of historical understandings of the facts and dynamics of African populations based on focused, local research has led to the creation and perpetuation of notable myths about African populations in the past. Perhaps the most powerful of these stereotypes is the Malthusinn and neo-Malthusian belief …
Boy-Wives and Female Husbands: Studies of African Homosexualities

La mobilisation de la main-d'oeuvre burkinabé, 1900–1974: Une vision retrospective
The history of Burkinabé migration since 1900 has been reconstructed mainly from colonial administration documents. This article endeavours to recreate that history from retrospective information collected within the context of a national inquiry on migration in Burkina Faso. While this distinctly “African” view concurs for the most part with the archival data, each source contributes its own specific dimension. Only on the phenomenom of outward …

Labour Reservoirs and Population: French Colonial Strategies in Koudougou, Upper Volta, 1914 to 1939
The colonial authorities perceived Upper Volta as the most important labour reservoir in French West Africa. Koudougou, the most populous administrative subdivision of what was Upper Volta during the colonial period, was probably also the most densely settled. Various types of colonial labour policies are examined. These include forced labour in its forms of annual ‘ prestations ’ and longer-term, large-scale recruiting for major public works, as…
Eastern Libya, Wadai and the Sanūsīya: A Ṭarīqa and a Trade Route
The caravan route linking Benghazi and Wadai was probably the most important avenue of long-distance trade between the Mediterranean and the eastern Sudan in the late nineteenth century. It remained economically viable well after 1900, after commerce on routes further west had declined. Beginning with the Mejabra trader from Jālū who first found a direct route from Cyrenaica to Wadai in 1809 or 1810, this article traces the history of the route i…
Blood Partnership in Theory and Practice: The Expansion of Muslim Power in Dar Al-Kuti
This article examines the institution of blood partnership, first theoretically, and then with reference to northern Equatorial Africa and Dar al-Kuti, a Muslim slave-raiding and slave-trading state. Contemporary anthropologists described blood partnership schematically as the exchange of blood and of conditional curses between two individuals or groups for the purpose of guaranteeing co-operation. They also suggested that blood partnership creat…

Research Resources in Chad and the Central African Republic
Neither Chad (or Tchad) nor the Central African Republic (or République Centrafricaine) has been much studied by American scholars. Because of this the following report discusses more than merely the archival resources of the two countries; it is hoped that the more practical aspects of research there that are discussed will render it more useful. The Institut Tchadien des Sciences Humaines (henceforth INTSH) supervises research projects in Chad …
