  • Automated extraction of discourse networks from large volumes of media data

    Open Access•Mario Angst, N Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Network Science•2025•References: 9

Understanding and tracking societal discourse around essential governance challenges of our times is crucial. One possible heuristic is to conceptualize discourse as a network of actors and policy beliefs. Here, we present an exemplary and widely applicable automated approach to extract discourse networks from large volumes of media data, as a bipartite graph of organizations and beliefs connected by stance edges. Our approach leverages various n…

  • Attitudes to language and bilingualism in residential care for older persons in Ireland

    Open Access•N Muller, Angela M Medina•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2024

Language as a primary vehicle for communication and cognition is intimately linked to the construction of identities and social relationships, and to social participation and inclusion. By means of appraisal analysis (a tool grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics) of interview data, we explored attitudes to language(s), speakers and language use in a nursing home for older people in Ireland, where a large proportion of residents and staff ar…

  • Conceptualizations of aging and cognitive competence

Open Access•Sophia Lindeberg, Christina Samuelsson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging Studies•2022•References: 4

Inviting participants to share their experiences of cognitive testing can reveal valuable information on how they conceptualize cognition and aging, as well as the testing process itself. Reflections may also reveal potential dementia worry. Evaluations and accounts are closely related to face-saving acts

  • The role of consistency in use of morphosyntactic forms in child-directed speech in the acquisition of Irish, a minority language undergoing rapid language change

Open Access•Stanislava Antonijevic, Sarah Ann MUCKLEY et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2020

Irish is a rapidly changing minority language spoken as the main community language in some areas of the officially Irish-speaking Gaeltacht regions in Ireland. We analyse narratives from 17 parent–child dyads, living in one such area. All children, aged 3–6;4, had high exposure to the local variety of Irish. The input quality was measured by specifying consistency and accuracy of use of morphosyntactic forms in parental narratives directed to th…

  • Avoiding interactional conflict in dementia

Jackie Guendouzi, Ashley Meaux et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Aggression…•2016

Sociolinguistic research in the general population has established the existence of gender differences in the social use of language. In particular, it has been noted that women use more markers of politeness, small talk and structural devices (e.g. minimal responses, tag questions) to help maintain their conversations. Analysis of interactions involving people with dementia (PWD) suggests that these gender based differences were still present in…

  • Feminisms

N Muller, Claire O’callaghan•ARTICLE•The Year s Work in Critical and…•2013

This chapter examines publications which provide new feminist interventions in debates that have occupied a prominent place in feminist theory since the inception of the women’s movement and that, in the new millennium, continue to inspire renewed debates across theory, practice and activism. The chapter is divided into five sections: 1. Introduction; 2. Introspection: Examining Narratives of Feminism, which reviews Clare Hemmings’ Why Stories Ma…

  • An Idiosyncratic Case of /r/ Disorder

N Muller, Martin J Ball et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2008

In this paper we report on the case of a 9;8-year-old male, who had been treated for a variety of speech problems over several years, but retained an idiosyncratic set of realizations for target English /r/. His target accent was general Southern USA English, which is fully rhotic in all positions in word structure. Speech data were recorded in a variety of tasks, different situations, and with different interlocutors (including reading aloud, pr…

  • The acquisition of the Rhotic Consonants by Welsh-English bilingual children

    Open Access•Martin J Ball, N Muller et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2001

This article reports on a study into the acquisition of Welsh and English phonology in Welsh-English bilingual children. It concentrates on the acquisition of the rhotic consonants, that is the trilled-r of Welsh and the approximant- r of English. The trilled-r shows differential patterns of acquisition depending on the age and language dominance of the subjects. It also demonstrates a wide range of substitutions, and it is argued that some of th…

  • The acquisition of the lateral fricative in WelshEnglish bilinguals

    Martin J Ball, N Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2001•References: 3

This article reports on a study into the acquisition of Welsh phonology in bilingual Welsh-English children. It concentrates on the acquisition of the voiceless alveolar lateral fricative, which showed a wide range of substitutions, and differential patterns of development dependent on the dominant language of the subjects, and the position within the word of the target. Various substitution strategies are described, including fricatives, and fr…

  • The realisation of schwa plus underlying /r/ and /n/ in a local dialect of the Palatinate

    Open Access•N Muller, Martin J Ball•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Barry (1995a) presents data from Standard German which, among other things, illustrates the two different schwa vowels found in that variety. Barry's acoustic analysis demonstrates that orthographic final '-e' has a regularly closer central vowel than orthographic final '-er', and that the latter normally has no closing r-consonant. Barry, however, did not present data to examine which variety of schwa was found before orthographic '-r-' when the…
