  • False perspectives on human language: Why statistics needs linguistics

Open Access•Matteo Greco, Andrea Cometa et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Language Sciences•2023

A sharp tension exists about the nature of human language between two opposite parties: those who believe that statistical surface distributions, in particular using measures like surprisal, provide a better understanding of language processing, vs. those who believe that discrete hierarchical structures implementing linguistic information such as syntactic ones are a better tool. In this paper, we show that this dichotomy is a false one. Relying…

  • Attention and Locality: On Clause-Boundedness and Its Exceptions in Multiple Sluicing

    Matthew Barros, Robert Frank•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 28

We provide an account of clause-boundedness in multiple sluicing that also captures its exceptions. Clause-boundedness arises whenever an embedded clause's subject is not coreferential with a topical discourse referent in the embedding clause. Our account ties clause-boundedness to discourse factors. We discuss implementations that import sensitivity to information structure into the syntax, and compare our approach with recent work-in particular…

  • Arguments for top-down derivations in syntax

Open Access•Robert Frank, Hadas Kotek•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2022

This paper argues for a top-down approach to syntactic structure building, instead of the more popularly assumed bottom-up approach. We present phenomena where properties of a higher structure condition elements or operations in a lower domain. The opposite pattern is, we claim, much rarer and more restricted. This follows from a top-down approach, given the relative time at which elements are integrated into the structure. Bottom-up derivations,…

  • Corporations in the Economy of Esteem: Perspectives Integrating Philosophy and Social Science

Robert Frank, Subramanian Rangan et al.•BOOK•Capitalism Beyond Mutuality?•2018

Even in a regulated and competitive market economy the behavior of firms leaves much to be desired. Beyond the invisible hand of the market and the iron hand of the law, this chapter outlines arguments for an intangible hand of civil society. The central mechanisms in the model rely on social esteem and self-esteem. These depend on assessments of true intentions and dispositions for costly pro-social actions. Instrumental pro-social actions matte…

  • Eliminating Rightward Movement: Extraposition as Flexible Linearization of Adjuncts

    Tim Hunter, Tim B Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 29

We propose an account of adjunct extraposition that does not invoke rightward movement. Instead, the noncanonical placement of adjuncts at the right edge of a sentence arises from the very same mechanisms that allow adjuncts to behave flexibly with respect to basic constituency tests and to avoid reconstruction. The system we propose naturally explains the locality restrictions on extraposition and certain interactions between extraposition and m…

  • The Darwin Economy: Liberty, Competition, and the Common Good (translated by Nikolay Edelman)

    Open Access•Robert Frank•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Sociology•2013

Paralysis», in which Robert Frank discusses reasons why the US political system seems to be paralyzed, even in the face of urgent economic problems.According to the author, this paralysis mainly stems from the existing ignorance of the basic facts and logic that govern human behavior

  • Notes on Phase Extension

    Robert Frank•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2007

    1. The ingredients of locality Since the early 1960s, one of the major goals of work in generative syntax has been to explain the locality properties of syntactic dependencies. Current accounts in the Minimalist framework derive locality from two basic notions. First, the syntactic relations that give rise to agreement and displacement are subjected to the Minimal Link Condition , which stipulates that such relations can obtain only in the absenc…

  • Conceptualizing Hybridization: On the Diffusion of Asian Medical Knowledge to Germany

    Open Access•Robert Frank, Robert T Frank et al.•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2004•Cited by: 13•References: 12

Scholars have explored a broad range of topics affected by the dynamics of globalization. The field of 'medicine', however, has largely been neglected, even though there is a long history of transcontinental diffusion of medical knowledge. This article aims to analyse the latest episode in medical globalization: the diffusion of Asian medical knowledge to the western world. Twenty-nine semistructured interviews with German medical doctors who are…

  • Medical acupuncture in Germany: Patterns of Consumerism Among Physicians and Patients

    Open Access•Robert Frank, Robert T Frank et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 17

Since the (re) emergence of heterodox medicine across the Western world, there have been numerous interpretations of this phenomenon by the social sciences. Heterodox patients were said to be active consumers holding postmodern values, while heterodox physicians were described as heretics. Medical doctors taking up heterodox medicine were criticised for acting in their own financial interests. To examine these notions, we selected the most promin…

  • Towards an ethnography of Indian homeopathy

    Robert Frank, Robert T Frank et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology and Medicine•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Despite its large number of practitioners, medical anthropology has given little attention to Indian homeopathy. In historical accounts, homeopathy's popularity is explained by its position as a modern, yet non-colonial form of medicine, which became indigenized during the last 150 years. Other scholars argue that homeopathic concepts converge with Indian ideas on healing. However, few empirical data have been gathered on homeopathic practice in …

TAG has been extensively studied both for its mathematical properties and for its usefulness in computational linguistics applications. Frank shows that incorporating TAG's formally restrictive operations for structure building considerably simplifies …

  • Integrating homeopathy and biomedicine: Medical practice and knowledge production among German homeopathic physicians

    Open Access•Robert Frank, Robert T Frank•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2002•Cited by: 21•References: 8

The purpose of this study is to assess the ways in which homeopathic physicians deal with the conceptual tensions between homeopathy and biomedicine. The data-collection included twenty semi-structured interviews which were conducted with homeopathic physicians in Berlin. Three distinct patterns of homeopathic practice emerged from the data: a) segregating the patients into categories of homeopathic and biomedical patients; b) complementing a pre…

    Robert Frank, Robert T Frank et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology and Medicine•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 21

In the sociology of health and illness, the heterogeneous field of heterodox medicine is often conceptualised as a more or less homogeneous entity. All kinds of heterodox modes of treatment are pooled together in order to discover the heterodox patient. In this way, differences between several heterodox modes of treatment are lost and the emerging picture remains vague. In this paper, we concentrate on one particular mode of treatment: Ayurveda. …

  • Primitive C-Command

    Open Access•Robert Frank, K Vijay‐shanker•ARTICLE•Syntax•2001•Cited by: 4

Work in syntactic theory almost universally assumes that hierarchy in syntactic structure is characterized in terms of an abstract primitive relation of dominance. In this paper, we suggest that hierarchy should instead be determined via a primitive c-command relation. This perspective turns out to restrict the range of possible syntactic structures in a linguistically natural way, deriving restrictions on possible configurations that must otherw…

In studying the various types of commitment to Europe from the 1920s today, Robert Frank retraces a complex history with its golden ages and its crises. Many personalities, circles and elites have partipated in this involvement, from Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi to Jean Monnet, from Aristide Briand to Jacques Delors, from Paul Valéry to Edgard Morin. But this history turns is back on that of the…
