  • Multi-analytical procedure for radiocarbon dating of Pozzolana mortars from public buildings in Pompeii

Open Access•Sara Calandra, Valeria Amoretti et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

Roman mortars were typically composed of an air-hardening lime mixed with materials exhibiting pozzolanic behaviour (e.g., pozzolana or cocciopesto), which conferred hydraulic properties to the material. So far, many characterizations of pozzolanic mortars have been carried out, revealing their complexity. The feasibility of radiocarbon dating for such mortars remains debated, with published data even suggesting that it may not be a viable method…

Open Access•Annalaura Casanova Municchia, Gloria Adinolfi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2026

The Monterozzi Necropolis in Tarquinia (Italy), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most important contexts for Etruscan wall painting, with over 100 decorated tombs dating from the 7th to the 3rd century BCE. Despite its significance, the materials and manufacturing techniques of these murals remain partially investigated. To address this, the ARANTH campaign (Archaeometric Research on Ancient Tarquinian Heritage), promoted by PACT (Arch…

  • Mosaic Tesserae from the Roman Villa of Aiano in Tuscany (Italy)

    Open Access•G Bartolozzi, Bracci et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 28

The mosaic tesserae that are the topic of this study were found during an archeological excavation in a Roman villa at Aiano, in the municipality of San Gimignano, Tuscany (Italy). Many thousands of tesserae were found in the site in many different stratigraphic units (US). For this study, 392 tesserae mainly from three US (US 1095, US 5010 and US 5015 being the most consistent ones) were selected for non-invasive analyses. They might be tesserae…

  • Codex 4D” Project

    Open Access•Eva Pietroni, A Botteon et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•References: 3

This paper sheds light on the manufacturing processes, techniques, and materials used in the splendid illuminations of the oldest surviving copy of De Balneis Puteolanis, preserved at the Angelica Library in Rome (Ms. 1474). The codex is one of the masterpieces of mid-13th-century Italian-Southern illumination, traditionally referred to as the commission of Manfredi, son of Frederick II. The findings reported in the article result from the interd…

  • Les lieux mémoriels des frères Bellocchio, entre cinéma et littérature

    Open Access•Claudia Conti•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études romanes•2023

  • Technology of Medieval Mortars

Open Access•Laura Rampazzi, Maria Perla Colombini et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 23

This work proposes a multi-analytical approach to determine the additives in historical mortars, the use of which is widely described in bibliographical sources, but has rarely been reported in the literature. A protocol to thoroughly analyse mortars was created (optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry). These techniques, which had already been carried out on sample…

  • The Stucco Technique of the Magistri Comacini

Open Access•Laura Rampazzi, Biagio Rizzo et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 21

This paper is aimed at defining the artistic technique performed by the outstanding artist Isidoro Bianchi for the Baroque stucco decorations in the church of Santa Maria dei Ghirli (Campione d'Italia, Italy). Samples of stucco were examined by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with a microprobe, X‐ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and laser ablation mass …
