Avoiding the Appearance of Virtue
We examine why organizations may at times decrease their performance after receiving a positive rating. We argue that in contrast to the prevailing assumption that organizations will strive for favorable ratings to achieve reputational benefits, incompatibility between a positive rating and a dominant institutional logic may cause recognized firms to question the perceived value of maintaining superior performance, thus leading them to strategica…
Karl Kautsky on Democracy and Republicanism
Once deemed 'the pope of Marxism', Karl Kautsky (1854–1938) was the leading theoretician of the German Social Democratic Party and one of the most prominent public intellectuals of his time. However, during the twentieth century a constellation of historical factors ensured that his ideas were gradually consigned to near oblivion. Not only has his political thought been dismissed in non-Marxist historical and political discourse, but his ideas ar…
Marxism after Marx
Today, Karl Kautsky (1854–1938) is mainly remembered for his polemics against the young Bolshevik regime or as the ‘renegade’ in Lenin’s The Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky (1918), which pillories him for his wavering stance in opposing World War I and his (later) outright hostility to the Russian Revolution of October 1917. Kautsky’s authority as a Marxist theoretician was seriously called into question ever since Lenin’s polemic…
Spengler’s Prussian Socialism
Oswald Spengler (1880–1936) was one of the most significant thinkers of the Weimar Republic, Germany’s first democracy. His work, notably the two-volume, 1200-page Der Untergang des Abendlandes ( Decline of the West , 1918/22), had a profound influence on the intellectual discourses of the time in Germany and beyond. 1 Yet, despite the high esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries, his thought has been seriously under-researched. In Engl…
Difference in degrees
We contribute to the literature on firms' responses to institutional pressures and environmental information disclosure. We hypothesize that CEO characteristics such as education and tenure will influence firms' likelihood to voluntarily disclose environmental information. We test our hypotheses by examining firms' responses to the Carbon Disclosure Project ( CDP ) and find that firms led by newly appointed CEOs and CEOs with MBA degrees are more…

Economic Implications
The policies of the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) are headline news. The fact that Standard's policies are not spoken of as "public" policies is little more than an accident of terminology; certainly they are public in their sweep and import, and certainly in their impact upon the public mind. The policies and actions of Standard (New Jersey) are not alone in these respects. Standard is a giant corporation; there are other giant corporations …
Public Policy and the Growth of the Power Industry
Every significant index attests to the extraordinary growth of the electric-power industry throughout the first four and a half decades of the present century. Physical output multiplied forty times between 1900 and 1939, a record exceeded during this period only by the automobile and cigarette industries. Labor efficiency and efficiency in the use of fuel increased well above the average for industry generally, and yet employment rose ninefold. …
