Introducing Chuck Levenstein, Poetry Editor
Trump's Electoral Triumph

Smoke-Free Airlines and the Role of Organized Labor
Labor unions play an important role in debates about smoke-free worksites. We investigated the role of flight attendants and their unions in creating smoke-free air travel. We used case study methodology to search tobacco industry documents and labor union periodicals and to interview key informants (i.e., people identified as having first-hand information and experience in the campaign to make airlines smoke free). We then compared findings acro…
The Cotton Dust Papers

How can cities and regions foster sustainable development? What role can a university play in this process? These are the central questions addressed in this innovative collection of essays, which brings together scholars in such diverse fields as history, political economy, community studies, industrial theory, economic geography, environmental studies, ergonomics and work design, race and gender studies, manufacturing engineering, and public he…
Occupational Health of Southeast Asian Immigrants in a US City
Objectives. This study sought to characterize occupational injury and illness cases identified through 3 different sources of data on a population of immigrant workers. Methods. Participants were Cambodian and Lao workers living in Lowell, Mass. A household survey allowed comparisons between characteristics of work-related cases documented in workers’ compensation wage replacement records and hospital records and characteristics of self-reported …
Occupational Injury and Illness Surveillance
Occupational health surveillance data are key to effective intervention. However, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics survey significantly underestimates the incidence of work-related injuries and illnesses. Researchers supplement these statistics with data from other systems not designed for surveillance. The authors apply the filter model of Webb et al. to underreporting by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers’ compensation wage-replacement do…

Byssinosis
Byssinosis, a lung disease caused by cotton dust, has been the subject of recent controversy. Debates over the nature of the disease, possible interactions with cigarette smoking, and the proposed reevaluation of the cotton dust standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have tended to overlook the plight of affected workers and to obscure the most effective means for preventing the disease. The present lack of definitive infor…
Modernization of Agriculture
In his discussion of "Pros and Cons of Agricultural Mechanization in the Third World" (MR, May 1982), Fred Magdoff did not consider the significant implications of agricultural modernization for public health and occupational health. The health effects of technical change in agriculture can be quite substantial. Several observers have recently reported serious hazards from unguarded harvesting equipment used in Cuban sugar plantations. Cases of d…
Health hazard surveillance by industrial workers
Urban Planning Aid Inc. set up an Occupational Health and Safety Project to train industrial workers in the detection, reporting and correction of health hazards in the working environment. The goals, development and organization of the project are described, with several examples of successful detection of such hazards by workers, and their subsequent correction. Workers often believe themselves to be incompetent to deal with these problems: it …
