  • Archaeological Lithotheques of Siliceous Rocks in Spain: First Diagnosis of the Lithotheque Thematic Network

    Open Access•David Ortega, A Arrizabalaga et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•References: 15

The use of lithotheques, libraries or collections of rocks is relatively recent in archaeological research in Spain. These collections have mostly been formed through isolated initiatives in different institutions, without any scientific strategy to guide their development and growth. The perspective in the last few years has changed substantially as these infrastructures are now regarded as a scientific resource of great interest and potential i…

In addition to the geographical, geological and environmental settings, the chronology and human remains are also reviewed, paying special attention to the specif…

  • Local-regional raw material procurement in the "Mesolithic with geometrics" south of the Picos de Europa (Cantabrian Mountains, Spain)

Open Access•Diego Herrero-Alonso, Diego Herrero Alonso et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2021

In this work we have analysed the provenance of the lithic raw materials recovered during the excavation campaigns at two Mesolithic sites of the Cantabrian Mountains: La Uña (levels III and IV) and El Espertín (level II). From the data obtained, differences between the two deposits and their levels have been observed, with sourcing of very similar lithic resources, but with important differences in the percentages. In the case of El Espertín the…

  • Archaeological Survey in Guadalajara: Human Occupation in Central Spain during the Late Pleistocene

    A Burke, Manuel Alcaraz-Castaño et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 43

The central Meseta is a high plateau located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula. Abundant evidence of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic occupations of the region contrasts with scarce evidence of a human presence during the early Upper Palaeolithic. On this basis, it has been suggested that climatic downturns triggered the temporary abandonment, or near abandonment, of the central Meseta during the Last Glacial period. We conducted three archaeolo…

  • Fish- and Shellmiddens from Galicia (Northwest Spain): Reflections upon a Neglected Coastal Cultural Heritage from the Iberian Peninsula

    Open Access•Eduardo González-Gómez De Agüero, Carlos Fernández-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities•2019

The physiographical features of the Galician sea, in particular its temperature, marine currents and plankton richness, have turned its waters into one of the most biologically diversified marine regions of the planet. The 1500 km of shorelines from this Northwest Iberian region are dotted with rías (Galician fjords) where settlements devoted to fishing and trade have existed since prehistoric times. These activities left abundant testimonies in …
