  • The relationship between optimism, pessimism and sleep difficulties in university students

Open Access•Boaventura Rodrigo Constantino Rodrigues de Ornelas Afonso, Mario J Soares et…•ARTICLE•Psicologia•2024

We found that the factors involved in the genesis/maintenance of sleep difficulties needed to be much better known. Our aims were to explore the role of cognitive emotion regulation (CER) and psychological distress (PD) as mediators in the relationship between pessimism/optimism and sleep difficulties. Our methods were to ask 253 university students to complete the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21, the Optimism-Pessimism-2 Scale, the Cogni…

  • The Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Scale

Open Access•Ana Telma Pereira, Ana Isabel Araújo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The Portuguese version of POCS has good validity, reliability and accuracy and may be considered ready for use in both clinic and research fields. POCS provides specific information regarding symptoms and individual patterns experienced by each woman, which allows normalization, destigmatization and personalized intervention

  • The Association between Exposure to Residential Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds and Measures of Central Arterial Stiffness in Healthy Middle-Aged Men and Women

    Open Access•Suzanne E Gilbey, Christopher M Reid et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

It is well reported that individuals spend up to 90% of their daily time indoors, with between 60% to 90% of this time being spent in the home. Using a cross-sectional study design in a population of 111 healthy adults (mean age: 52.3 ± 9.9 years; 65% women), we investigated the association between exposure to total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor residential environments and measures of central arterial stiffness, known to be related…

  • Lack of a relationship between vitamin D status and resting metabolic rate in Iranian adults

Open Access•Mojdeh Ebaditabar, Nadia Babaei et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2021

OBJECTIVES: Studies suggest a positive relationship between 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D)) and resting metabolic rate (RMR). We aimed to determine whether this relationship was also true of populations with very low vitamin D status. METHODS: Fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) were determined from multifrequency bioimpedance analysis (InBody 720, Korea). RMR was based on indirect calorimetry (Cortex Metalyser 3B, Germany). Fasting blood measu…

  • The Literary and Cultural Resonances of the Myth of Henry

Open Access•Maria Luísa De Castro Soares, Mario J Soares et al.•ARTICLE•Trames Journal of the Humanities…•2020

Two thematic lines: the omnipresence of the theme of the maritime voyage in Portuguese culture â which AntÃ3nio Quadros calls the â myth of Henryâ , â and its inflections in literature, more specifically, in CamÃμesâ s The Lusiads (Os Lusíadas) and Fernão Mendes Pintoâ s Pilgrimage (Peregrinação) were examined. • Promoting Reminiscences with Virtual Reality Headsets

Open Access•Tiago Coelho, Cátia Marques et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This study aimed to explore the feasibility and effects of promoting reminiscences, using virtual reality (VR) headsets for viewing 360° videos with personal relevance, with people with dementia. A study with a mixed methods design was conducted with nine older adults diagnosed with dementia. Interventions consisted of four sessions, in which the participants' engagement, psychological and behavioral symptoms, and simulation sickness symptoms wer…

  • Associations Between Sub-Clinical Markers of Cardiometabolic Risk and Exposure to Residential Indoor Air Pollutants in Healthy Adults in Perth, Western Australia

    Open Access•Suzanne E Gilbey, Christopher M Reid et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

The findings of this study may provide direction for future research that will further contribute to our understanding of the relationship that exists between indoor air pollution and sub-clinical markers of cardiometabolic risk

  • The Association between Indoor Air Quality and Adult Blood Pressure Levels in a High-Income Setting

Open Access•Krassi Rumchev, Mario J Soares et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Background: Indoor air pollution is still considered one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. We aimed to investigate the potential association between indoor particulate matter (PM) and fasting clinic blood pressure in adult Australians. Methods: Sixty-three participants residing within the Perth metropolitan area were studied. Participants were aged between 18 and 65 years and free of major medical conditions. We conducte…

  • The associations of vitamin D status and dietary calcium with the metabolic syndrome

Open Access•Poonam K Pannu, Yun Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective To examine the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), dietary Ca intake and presence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Design A stratified cluster sample of a population aged 18–75 years from the Victorian Health Monitor survey. Setting Non-institutionalized adults living in private dwellings in Victoria, Australia. Subjects Adults ( n 3404) with complete data and without type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Results Adjusted fo…

  • The potential role of irisin in the thermoregulatory responses to mild cold exposure in adults

Open Access•Emily Calton, Emily K Calton et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

Mild cold exposure increased vasoconstriction with a drop in IET and these were related. Greater irisin was related to a greater fasting fat oxidation in the absence of shivering. A potential gender bias in thermoregulation was noted. Am. J. Hum. Biol. 28:699-704, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

  • High dietary diversity is associated with obesity in Sri Lankan adults

Open Access•Ranil Jayawardena, Nuala M Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013
