Principal leadership, school processes, and student achievement
This study aims to: (a) examine the direct and indirect relationships between principal leadership and student achievement through school processes in Hong Kong and Macau, and (b) investigate how school contexts as conditions for leadership mechanisms linking principal leadership to student achievement. Using a novel approach—multigroup multilevel structural equation modeling—and drawing on PISA 2022 data, we find that school context not only inf…
The religious and the religious “nones”
Investigations into the relationship between religiousness and mental health have increasingly focused on nuances between atheists and agnostics (the religious “Nones”). The present study investigates links between religiousness and mental health, and impacts of religiousness on mental health treatment attitudes. Data were analysed for 331 participants recruited online and through social media. Results revealed significantly different ratings of …
Self-concept and intrinsic motivation in foreign language learning
An increasingly globalized economy requires a workforce with multilingual capability. However, the United States education system has de-emphasized foreign language learning, such as in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), hurting the recruitment and retention of foreign language learners. To compensate, educators may be able to increase the retention of foreign language learners by fostering intrinsic motivation, but not much currently is known …
Interrelationships Among Dimensions of Flow and Reactance
Development and psychometric properties of the Evasive Attitudes of Sexual Orientation Scale (Easos)
The purpose of this article was to develop and evaluate evidence for reliability and validity of a multifactor measure of evasive attitudes of sexual orientation across two studies. The Evasive Attitudes of Sexual Orientation Scale (EASOS) was inspired by Neville, Lilly, Duran, Lee, and Browne’s (20
Development of the Social Issues Advocacy Scale-2 (Sias-2)
Body dissatisfaction among gay men
Differentiation of Self Inventory—Short Form
Understanding the Relationships Among White and African American Women’s Sexual Objectification Experiences, Physical Safety Anxiety, and Psychological Distress
Does the Sustainability of Comprehensive Intervention Programs Depend on Parent Involvement
In this research, the importance and sustainability of one of the components of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), parent involvement, was studied identifying the importance placed on parent involvement determined the programs’ capacity for sustainability. Results show parent involvement activities, which may provide the most beneficial outcome for parents and their children, are activities that include pa…
An Empirical Investigation of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapeutic Model
The purpose of this study was to investigate the logotherapeutic model as described by Frankl that explains the relationships among the search for meaning in life, the presence of meaning in life, existential vacuum, existential frustration, noogenic neurosis, will-to-power, and will-to-pleasure. A sample of college students from a large Mid-Atlantic university ( N = 750) completed paper-and-pencil instruments for the variables. Structural equati…
Differentiation of Self, Stress, and Emotional Support as Predictors of Psychological Distress
Development and Assessment of the Social Issues Advocacy Scale
This article describes the development and the initial psychometric evaluation of the Social Issues Advocacy Scale in two studies. In the first study, an exploratory factor analysis (n = 278) revealed a four-factor scale, accounting for 71.4% of the variance, measuring different aspects of social issue advocacy: Political and Social Advocacy, Confronting Discrimination, Political Awareness, and Social Issue Awareness. The second study (n = 509) s…
Development and Validation of a Unidimensional Maltreatment Scale in the Add Health Data Set
Four maltreatment items were examined from Wave III (N = 13,516) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Item analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, cross-validation, reliability estimates, and convergent validity coefficients strongly supported the validity of using the four items as a unidimensional composite. Implications for education and practice are discussed
Computerized adaptive testing, anxiety levels, and gender differences
Validation of a TAI Short Form with an Adolescent Sample
Although test anxiety is increasingly used in research with multiple constructs, it is not always possible to administer a lengthy scale to measure it. Taylor and Deane (2002) developed a 5-item short form of the 20-item Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI; see Spielberger, Gonzalez, Taylor, Algaze, & Anton, 1978). Although evidence of reliability and validity was good, there were several limitations, including the age and gender of the sample, and the l…
