  • How do common pool natural resources relate to rural income, poverty and inequality? A multi-country assessment

Open Access•Anamika Das, Subhash Lele et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2026

  • Hundreds of millions of people in the tropics need both wild harvests and other forms of economic development for their well-being

    Open Access•Geoff Wells, Casey M Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2023

of millions of people in the tropics harvest ''wild'' common-pool resources d Wild harvests are correlated with high relative well-being in remote and poor areas d Access to infrastructure, cities, assets, and skills also increase well-being overall d The well-being of many people relies on both wild resources and economic development

  • Constraints on Rice Cultivation in Eastern Madagascar: Which Factors Matter to Smallholders, and Which Influence Food Security

Open Access•Saskia Dröge, Mahesh Poudyal et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2022

In the eastern rainforests of Madagascar, rainfed swidden rice cultivation remains prevalent despite efforts to encourage uptake of irrigated systems to reduce deforestation. We used agricultural surveys with a stratified sample of 171 households to investigate constraints on and productivity of irrigated and rainfed rice perceived by farmers, and actual rice yields. Irrigated rice plots had higher median yields (1.72 t/ha compared to 0.62 t/ha),…

  • Human migration to the forest frontier: Implications for land use change and conservation management

    Open Access•Julia P G Jones, Rina Mandimbiniaina et al.•ARTICLE•Geo Geography and Environment•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 23

Human migration is often considered an important driver of land use change and a threat to protected area integrity, but the reasons for in‐migration, the effectiveness of conservation restrictions at stemming migration, and the extent to which migrants disproportionately contribute to land use change has been poorly studied, especially at fine spatial scales. Using a case study in eastern Madagascar (603 household surveys, mapping agricultural l…

  • Estimating welfare impacts where property rights are contested: Methodological and policy implications

    Open Access•O Sarobidy Rakotonarivo, Jette B Jacobsen et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 44

Where rights over natural resources are contested, the effectiveness of conservation may be undermined and it can be difficult to estimate the welfare impacts of conservation restrictions on local people. In particular, researchers face the dilemma of estimating respondents’ Willingness To Pay (WTP) for rights to resources, or their Willingness To Accept (WTA) compensation for foregoing these rights. We conducted a discrete choice experiment with…

  • Can Redd+ social safeguards reach the ‘right’ people? Lessons from Madagascar

    Open Access•Mahesh Poudyal, Bruno Ramamonjisoa et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2016•Cited by: 16•References: 8

There is extensive debate about the potential impact of the climate mechanism REDD+ on the welfare of forest-dwelling people. To provide emission reductions, REDD+ must slow the rate of deforestation and forest degradation: such a change will tend to result in local opportunity cost to farmers at the forest frontier. Social safeguard processes to mitigate negative impacts of REDD+ are being developed and can learn from existing safeguard procedur…

  • Shareholder perceptions of individual and common benefits in Swedish forest commons

Open Access•Gun Lidestav, Mahesh Poudyal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2013

In the period 1861 to 1918, thirty-three commons were established in Northern Sweden. This was linked to the finalisation of the Great Redistribution of Forest Holdings in Dalarna and the delimitation process in Västerbotten and Norrbotten. They were intended to serve as an instrument for improved and sustained forest production, the viability of farmers and the liveability of the rural communities in the areas where they were established. The ai…

  • Chiefs and Trees: Tenures and Incentives in the Management and Use of Two Multipurpose Tree Species in Agroforestry Parklands in Northern Ghana

    Mahesh Poudyal•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 9

Amid growing concerns about the perceived population decline of shea (Vitellaria paradoxa) and locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) trees in the agroforestry parklands, this article explores the impacts of differing tree tenure regimes on their management and use. Using a case study of two communities in Northern Region, Ghana, the study shows that the differing institutional arrangements governing the ownership, access, and use of these two species ha…
