  • Buried with their Buckles On: Clothed Burial at the Augustinian Friary, Cambridge

    Open Access•Craig Cessford, Andrew Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 18

GIRDLE BUCKLES ASSOCIATED with several groups of burials at the later-medieval Augustinian friary in Cambridge indicate that clothed burial was common, with a much higher prevalence than usual for the period. The clothed burial was highly regularised, in terms of both the garments worn and the types of buckles used, and apparently limited to members of the Augustinian Order. The buckles were primarily supplied by the friary, rather than represent…

  • A Reassessment of Leatherwork From the Sutton Hoo Ship Burial

Open Access•Marquita Volken, Quita Mould et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•2020•References: 3

The seventh-century ship burial at Sutton Hoo Mound 1, excavated in 1939, contained an impressive display of gold, silver and bronze objects, weapons and other offerings. Organic materials such as wood, textiles and leather were also present. The leather items were studied, and the results published in 1983, when two pairs of shoes were identified from the extremely fragmented remains that survived. Recently, a reassessment of the leather fragmen…

  • Men in Black: Performing masculinity in 17th- and 18th-century Iceland

    Open Access•Michèle Hayeur-Smith, Gavin Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 37

Studies in masculinity have lagged behind in the field of gender studies though recent scholarship is making up for this disparity. In this paper, we tackle the question of masculinity and modernity in early modern Iceland through an analysis of archaeological material relating to dress from the site of an Icelandic bishopric and school, Skálholt, during the late 17th and 18th centuries. We explore both the symbolic and performative dimensions of…

  • Early Anglian Catterick and Catraeth

    Peter R Wilson, Peter Cardwell et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The evidence from scattered excavations undertaken over several decades in Catterick is brought together and assessed. The evidence of both settlement and burial indicates activity in the early Anglian period. Indications of status and ethnicity are discussed, and set within their historical context

  • Marine Salt Extraction: The Excavation of Salterns at Wainfleet St Mary, Lincolnshire

    Fachtna Mcavoy, R H Healey et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1994•References: 1

THE EXCAVATIONS have shown how documented procedures of marine salt extraction were applied in practice in the later 15th and early 16th century on the Wash coast between Wainfleet and Wrangle

  • The Shaugh Moor Project: Fourth Report — Environment, Context and Conclusion

    Open Access•N D Balaam, K Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1982•Cited by: 8•References: 24

For five years from 1976 to 1980 the archaeology and environment of a block of landscape centred around Shaugh Moor on south-west Dartmoor were analysed prior to the destruction of some of the evidence by china clay working. The investigations began in 1976 with a survey of the field monuments and the initiation of soil, vegetation, small mammal and phosphate studies in addition to the search for peat deposits of sufficient antiquity. From 1977 t…
