Thomas Jefferson: Reputation and Legacy
Slavery
The most contentious aspect of Jefferson's legacy concerns slavery. Since 1776 people have pondered the ethical and moral dilemma posed by the fact that Jefferson, who declared “all men are created equal” owned 600 human beings as slaves during his lifetime. This chapter examines Jefferson's relationship with slavery and traces historians' efforts to address the issue.
