  • Emergence of a Kwashiorkor-Like Syndrome Associated with Protein-Calorie Malnutrition in the Developing Rhesus Monkey ( Macaca Mulatta )

    Open Access•Charles R Geist, Olin W Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

An infant rhesus monkey was separated from its mother at 90 days of age, housed individually, and at 120 days of age placed on a purified low protein diet containing 3.5% casein by weight. To enhance the effects of protein-calorie malnutrition, a protein-deficient diet containing 2.0% casein by weight was introduced at 415 days of age. When compared with other animals on an identical dietary regime, the subject manifested a reduced intake of food…

  • Early Detection of Final Performance in an Introductory Course in General Psychology

    Open Access•Robert R Zimmermann, Larry A Wise et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

Final grades in an introductory psychology course were found to correlate significantly with a test representative of course content and ACT scores. Contrary to traditional predictions, the content specific test was not superior to the general abilities test in the prediction of final grades. Course content tests taken during the first three weeks of the academic quarter correlated .85 with course content tests taken during the last 3 wk. of the …

  • Are Pronounceability and Effort Ratings Psychologically Equivalent

    Open Access•Olin W Smith, Pietro Badia et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Is Underwood and Schulz's (1960) pronounceability scale psychologically equivalent to Ryan and Smith's (1954) effort scale for work? CVCs with high or low m ′ values (Noble, 1961) were rated on both scales. Judgments of equivalence were inconsistent over S s and CVCs. The scales are not parallel by Gulliksen's (1950) criteria. They correlate .99 and over-all have nearly equal means, variances, and covariances. Differential effects of work on rate…

  • Additional Correlates of Greenberg and Jenkins' Linguistic S Scale

    Open Access•Olin W Smith, C W Koutstaal•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Greenberg and Jenkins (1964) reported a linear relationship between two independently derived scales. One was a linguistic substitution, S, scale of distance of CCVCs from English. The second was the means of judgments of distance from English of CCVCs constructed according to their S scale. Two hypotheses were tested. One was that a psychological correlate of their S scale was the effort of pronouncing. The second is that increasing values of th…

  • Pronounceability Ratings of Some CVCs: Their Reliability and Relationship to m

    Open Access•Olin W Smith, Pietro Badia et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

95 CVCs were rated for pronounceability ( p ') on a modification of Underwood and Schulz's 9-point scale. The correlation between testretest mean p ' ratings of the CVCs was .99. Correlation between mean p ' ratings of CVCs by two different groups of raters was .96. Mean p ' ratings of the two groups correlated .88 and .95 with Noble's m ' ratings of CVCs. Stability of the means in conjunction with the correlations is evidence that the p ' scale …
