‘Materializing’ Self-Transcendence: Redescribing Lonergan’s Heuristic of Religious Experience in Dialogue with Judith Butler
“Religious experience” and “religious self-transcendence” are key concepts in the philosophical theology of Bernard Lonergan, SJ (1904–1984). In the last 30 years, however, both the empirical sources of Lonergan’s universalist view of religion and the category of “religion” itself have been subjected to searching postcolonial critiques. As a partial response to such critiques, I offer in this essay a creative redescription of Lonergan’s heuristic…
Lonergan in the Post-Colony: Special Theme Issue Introduction
In the four essays of this special issue of Religious Studies and Theology, readers will encounter both meanings of “Lonergan and” described by Crowe. On the one hand, all four of us have identified a scholarly dialogue partner for Lonergan and offered at least some comparative judgements. These include novelist and literary critic Toni Morrison (1931–2019), decolonial theorist Sylvia Wynter (1928–), feminist philosopher Judith Butler (1956–) and…

The Future of Hindu-Christian Studies: A Theological Inquiry, written by Francis X. Clooney, S.J
of Divinity and Professor of Comparative Theology at Harvard Divinity School, has largely defined the contemporary fields of comparative theology and Hindu-Christian studies in North America. In 2010, he authored a short introduction to the former field, simply entitled Comparative Theology (Malden, ma: Wiley-Blackwell, 2010). In the present volume, he performs a similar service for Hindu-Christian studies. Whereas the 2010 volume served mainly t…
Vernacular Catholicism, Vernacular Saints: Selva J. Raj on "Being Catholic the Tamil Way"
A collection of Raj's groundbreaking ethnographic studies of "vernacular" Catholic traditions in Tamil Nadu, India. Finalist for the 2018 Best Book in Hindu-Christian Studies presented by the Society for Hindu-Christian Studies At the turn of the twenty-first century, Selva J. Raj (1952–2008) was one of the most important scholars of popular Indian Christianity and South Asian religion in North America. Vernacular Catholicism, Vernacular Saints g…
A Century of Advaita Mission: Tracing a Lineage and Opening a Conversation
Several recent studies have explored questions of mission and missiology in comparative, interreligious perspective. This essay also engages the possibility of an interreligious theology of mission, albeit with a narrow focus on the nondualist Hindu tradition of Advaita Vedānta. To this end, the author profiles four movements: the Ramakrishna movement, Ramanasramam, the Chinmaya Mission, and Transcendental Meditation. Each of these movements depl…
Hindu-Catholic Encounters in Goa: Religion, Colonialism, and Modernity . By Alexander Henn
Ritual transgression and religious hybridity have emerged as major themes in the study of South Asian religions, and indeed religion more broadly. At least since the publication of Selva J. Raj and Corinne C. Dempsey’s edited volume, Popular Christianity in India: Riting between the Lines (SUNY Press, 2002), the study of Hindu–Christian relations in South Asia has shifted decisively out of a rigid framework of top-down, clerical enculturation int…

The Return of Comparative Theology
In this essay, we examine the emerging discipline of comparative theology as a valuable window into the problematic of the return of religion and theology after "religion." The first section discusses recent historical critiques of comparative religion, focusing particularly on its emergence from a late nineteenth-century discourse that was also called "comparative theology." This critique focuses attention on the unacknowledged normative commitm…
