Late Dorset Deposits at Iita: Site Formation and Site Destruction in Northwestern Greenland
The site of Iita (Etah) could, in many ways, serve as a poster child for climate-change-driven destruction of arctic coastal sites. Sitting on an alluvial fan at the base of a steep-sloped kame deposit on the north shore of Foulke Fjord in northwestern Greenland, the site has rich historical and late prehistoric occupations visible on its surface. However, more uniquely for the high Arctic, 1,000 years of continuous human use are locked in strati…
Understanding Dorset From a Different Perspective: Worked Antler, Bone, and Ivory
Late Dorset Triangular Midpassages in the Canadian Arctic and Northwest Greenland: Origins and Dispersal
Midpassages are the most recognizable architectural feature associated with the entire Paleoeskimo period (2800 BC-AD 1300) in the Canadian and Greenlandic Arctic. Usually built of stone, midpassages are rectangular-shaped axial structures that run through the center of tent rings and semisubterranean house depressions. However, a unique triangular form of midpassage developed in association with the Late Dorset complex in the Boothia Peninsula a…
Living on the Edge: Inughuit Women and Geography of Contact
The women of northwestern Greenland experienced contact with Euro-American men in multiple ways and in a variety of geographical contexts. Together the archaeological record and unpublished historical documents reveal the complexities of these situations and women’s responses to them. Archaeological and documentary data from two early 20th-century contact situations at Iita in northwestern Greenland and Floeberg Beach on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut…
The Inglefield Land Archaeology Project: Introduction and Overview
Geografisk Tidsskrift—Danish Journal of Geography 110(2):279–296, 2010 Archaeological field research was undertaken in northwestern Greenland between 2004 and 2009 by the Inglefield Land Archaeology Project (ILAP). Over 2400 cultural features were recorded during foot survey, with additional sites located during helicopter reconnaissance. Focusing on the late prehistoric to historic transition, excavation of two Thule-Inughuit winter houses and a…
The Walrus and the Carpenter: Late Dorset Ivory Working in the High Arctic
Use Wear on Bone and Antler Tools from the Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories
A series of experiments making and using bone and antler tools show that functional identifications of these tools can be made with confidence in some circumstances. Using principles from the field of tribology, the experiments demonstrate that different uses leave different microscopic traces on bone and antler. They also show that when the materials used are similar, the wear produced will be similar. In particular, wet materials, including sno…
