Sean Gilsdorf, The Favor of Friends: Intercession and Aristocratic Politics in Carolingian and Ottonian Europe
Helmut Reimitz. History, Frankish Identity and the Framing of Western Ethnicity, 550–850
The title of this dense, difficult, but immensely rewarding book is at once perfectly accurate and a little misleading; the terms are simply too abstract to convey the variegated richness with which the author develops them. Begin with “Frankish Identity”: in fact, in Helmut Reimitz’s view there never was a “Frankish identity.” Instead, a number of complementary and competing Frankish identities developed over time and existed at the same time, w…
Flothilde's visions and Flodoard's histories: A tenth‐century mutation
Although Flodoard of Reims is best known for his comprehensive historical writings, he also recorded separately the visions of a young girl named Flothilde. Re‐examining Flodoard's varied historical works in light of these visions reveals that he was unusually interested in visions generally, and particularly those of women. The question is why. In proposing answers, it will be suggested that both Flodoard's histories and Flothilde's visions repr…

Steven Vanderputten. Monastic Reform as Process: Realities and Representations in Medieval Flanders, 900–1100
For a very long time, and with only a few exceptions (Ernst Werner and Neithard Bulst, for example), scholars took the apologetic of monastic reform at face value, resulting in a narrative of repeated cycles of reform and decline. Acceptance of the apologetic also led scholars to present reform as the work of a handful of great monastic leaders, until biographies of the reformers became nearly as hagiographic as the sources on which the biographi…
The Conquest of Burgundy, the Peace of God, and the Diplomas of Robert the Pious
Throughout the ninth and tenth centuries the look and language of West Frankish royal charters were extraordinarily stable. This changed with dramatic suddenness under Robert the Pious (987/996-1031). Among the most important changes in his precepts is the appearance of third-party subscriptions. Historians have seen this as evidence of Robert’s weakness or of more pragmatic uses of writing. Here it is argued that they were an expression of Rober…
The Politics of Memory and Identity in Carolingian Royal Diplomas: The West Frankish Kingdom (840-987)
Based upon a ‘performative’ interpretation of royal charters, The Politics of Memory and Identity offers a new and surprising narrative of West Frankish history from the death of Louis the Pious in 840 to the demise of the Carolingian dynasty in 987. The key is a carefully contextualised analysis of the circumstances in which kings issued charters and an alert examination of the charters’ verbal and visual semiotics. For which monasteries and cat…
Is Robert I in hell: The diploma for Saint‐Denis and the mind of a rebel king (Jan. 25, 923)
Can one use the most formal and formulaic type of source left us by the early Middle Ages to probe the beliefs and values of a tenth‐century leader? An enquiry into Robert of Neustria's ‘deposition’ of Charles the Simple, the importance of Saint‐Denis to Robert, and the contemporary meaning of the battle of Soissons
Charles the Simple, Robert of Neustria, and the vexilla of Saint‐Denis
A recent consensus holds that the deposition of Charles the Simple by Robert of Neustria in 922 was the result of a sudden deterioration in their relationship that had nothing to do with any earlier hostilities. A close examination of contemporary diplomas suggests a very different story. In 898, Charles did not faithfully implement the agreement he had made with Robert's brother Odo that gave him the succession and he resisted recognizing Robert…
