  • Rollin, Charles (1661–1741)

Open Access•Ward Briggs, Ward W Briggs•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2017

Charles Rollin was one of the greatest eighteenth‐century historians of the ancient world whose Jansenist views put him at odds with the administrations of several French universities that employed him. His compendious histories won the devoted praise of Voltaire and Rousseau, but in translation his works influenced intellectuals across Europe and particularly the Founding Fathers of the United States.

    Ward W Briggs•ARTICLE•The Classical World•2017

What the Harvard School Has Taught Me Ward W. Briggs My chief contact with the Harvard School came during two periods of my career: the preparation of my dissertation and my editorship of Vergilius. My Doktorvater was Brooks Otis, the last Titan before the Olympian takeover of Virgilian studies. His gifts as a close and sensitive reader of texts demonstrated (starting from Richard Heinze) Virgil's unique "subjective style," and showed the consist…

    Ward W Briggs•ARTICLE•Polis The Journal for Ancient…•2002

The attitude of the American classical scholar Basil L. Gildersleeve toward the English may be taken as typical of Americans over the period of his long life. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, a city with deep economic and cultural ties to England, he found his youthful admiration for British scholarship offset by the sufferings of his ancestors in the Revolution and the War of 1812. At mid-century the allegiance of many American intellectu…

  • Reading Virgil and His Texts: Studies in Intertextuality

Ward Briggs, Ward W Briggs et al.•ARTICLE•Phoenix•2002

There has long been vital interest in the ways that texts affect each other--through translation, imitation, parody, and other forms of emulation and subversion. Throughout the last two millennia, the Virgilian text has created its own intertextual heritage, persisting in the works of Eliot, Frost, Lowell, and Heaney. Richard F. Thomas's new volume demonstrates that such control and manipulation of the inherited tradition is to be found with grea…
