Frontier transformations
African approaches to development have shifted, particularly in north-eastern Africa. Donor-driven policies have given way to state-led development 'visions', often with a focus on large-scale infrastructure projects – feeding into and reflecting 'Africa Rising' discourses. In Kenya and Ethiopia, these visions include flagship projects in the geographical frontiers, areas previously viewed as buffer zones, whose people have been historically marg…
Drunk and Alone in a K‐Mart Parking Lot
This paper describes the use of active learning strategies to teach research methods in a criminal justice course. We investigated the public’s response to a drunk asking for help unlocking a car door to drive home. Students learned the methodology of simulations and then participated in creating a psychological and social state of drinking and acting drunk while asking for help in unlocking their car door. We review the literature on active lear…
A Critical Review of Rural Poverty Literature
Poverty rates are highest in the most urban and most rural areas of the United States and are higher in nonmetropolitan than metropolitan areas. Yet perhaps because only one-fifth of the nation's 35 million poor people live in nonmetro areas, rural poverty has received less attention than urban poverty from both policy makers and researchers. The authors provide a critical review of literature that examines the factors affecting poverty in rural …
The Food Safety Net after Welfare Reform
This study documents reliance on the private and public food safety net in the Kansas City metropolitan area. While the use of food pantries is widespread, the frequency of food pantry use is low compared to food stamp use. However, almost 60 percent of food pantry recipients also received food stamps at some time during the studied period. Between 1998 and 2001, just over one‐third of food stamp clients also visited a pantry. The data suggest th…
Remarriage, Cohabitation, and Changes in Mothering Behavior
We used data from two waves of the National Survey of Families and Household to investigate changes in mothering behavior associated with remarriage or cohabitation by single mothers. We considered three dimensions of mothering: (a) time and supervision, (b) harsh discipline, and (c) relationship quality. Mothers and children agreed that mothers who remained in new partnerships used harsh discipline less frequently than mothers who remained singl…
