Recognition of the Chupicuaro archaeological zone was first made in publication in the latter half of the 1920s. Coincidental with the 1945 excavations at Chupicuaro was continuing construction of the Solis Dam, completion of which would create, and since has done so, a reservoir inundating the Chupicuaro vicinity.
