Human skin‐color sexual dimorphism: A test of the sexual selection hypothesis
Applied to skin color, the sexual selection hypothesis proposes that male preference for light‐skinned females explains the presence of light skin in areas of low solar radiation. According to this proposal, in areas of high solar radiation, natural selection for dark skin overrides the universal preference of males for light females. But in areas in which natural selection ceases to act, sexual selection becomes more important, and causes human …

The importance of dissertations for Dutch university history
The neglect of university dissertations by scholars of intellectual history and bibliographers means that they are not recognised as the building blocks of our appreciation of the day to day teaching in Dutch universities of the pre-industrial period and our knowledge of an important part of the Dutch national heritage, its printing output, is defective. As well as training the students to marshal an argument, dissertations played an important ro…

Strategic Minorities and the Global Network of Power: Western Thrace and Northern Ireland in Comparative Perspective
The relationship between ethnic communities who share a common national space is often affected by factors above civil society, such as inter-state relations, political and economic alliances, and geopolitical interests. The relevance of ethnic minorities' identity and behaviour to the international political environment becomes clear whenever an ethnic minority occupies territory of geopolitical and/or geo-economic importance to countries with c…

Visitations of the Plague at Leicester
Had Daniel Defoe not immortalised himself as the author of that inimitable work “Robinson Crusoe,” he would still have held a prominent place in the foremost rank of English novelists by the production of two of his less known works, which have been over-shadowed by his great masterpiece, namely, the “History of the Plague in London,” and the “Memoirs of a Cavalier.” These historical romances, or, as they might be more accurately termed, imaginar…
The Great Mace, and other Corporation Insignia of the Borough of Leicester
The custom of distinguishing men occupying positions of power as chiefs or rulers of the people by some outward symbol of authority, such as the mace or the sceptre (terms in-deed often used as synonymous), denoting the dignity of their office, is one undoubtedly of very great antiquity, both amongst savages in all ages, like the aborigines of Australia and New Zealand, and from the times of the polished ancient Greeks and Romans down to our own …
