Contested Territory, Strategic Rivalries, and Conflict Escalation
After bringing together independent information on contested territory, rivalries, and conflict escalation (militarized interstate disputes (MIDs) and war), we examine the timing of the temporal ordering of these three processes. Contrary to conventional expectations, we find the contested territory-militarized dispute-rivalry ordering to be rare. Rivalries and contested territory often begin at the same time. Next, after setting up a unified mod…
The Great Powers and Global Struggle, 1490-1990
In The Great Powers and Global Struggle Karen A. Rasler and William R. Thompson focus on two themes. They explore the rise and fall as well as the relative decline of major world powers over the past five hundred years, and they examine how these processes have set the stage for the outbreak of global war. Their interdisciplinary approach encompasses political science, economics, sociology, geography, and history. The most significant wars occur …
War and Systemic Capability Reconcentration
Historical-structural analyses of world politics tend to emphasize the theoretical significance of a handful of wars that over the past several hundred years have demarcated important changes in systemic structure. However, analysts do not fully agree on which wars have constituted the benchmarks of structural change and transition. Nor do they agree completely on the definitional criteria to be employed in identifying such wars. In addressing th…
War Making and State Making
Addressing the disputed relationship between war and the expansion of governmental expenditures and revenues, Box-Tiao intervention models are applied to a number of British (1700-1980), United States (1792-1980), French (1815-1979), and Japanese (1878-1980) spending and taxation series. Distinguishing between global and interstate wars, the more intensive and extensive bouts of warfare (global wars) tend to bring about abrupt, permanent impacts …
Global Wars, Public Debts, and the Long Cycle
The explanation of the rise and fall of the world system's leading powers in terms of uneven economic development tends to overlook the role of the creation and management of public credit and national debts. Prior to 1815, the Netherlands and Great Britain owed a significant proportion of their respective victories over the larger and wealthier states of Spain and France to the development of competitive financial capabilities. Winning, however,…
Systemic interaction opportunities and war behavior∗
This paper reexamines Singer and Small's (1968) finding that the direction of the relationship between interaction opportunities and war behavior differs by century. New indicators for the independent and dependent variables are introduced and examined for three time periods (1816–1914,1919–1939, and 1946–1965) utilizing OLS/GLS techniques. At a great power level of analysis, no significant relationships emerge for the 1816–1914 period. The findi…
Foreign Policy Makers, Personality Attributes, and Interviews
Content analytic procedures for operationalizing 6 personality attributes (Hermann, 1974, 1980) are applied to 92 (1950–1978) interviews with 10 heads of state and government. Focusing on data reliability, a test of temporal consistency is examined. The outcome suggests that the trait scores are not sufficiently consistent across time to be considered highly reliable. Two possible sources of trait score variance (data source and situation) are co…
