  • Realising immigration as a human right

Open Access•David Martínez Rojas, Alexander Elliott•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2022•References: 30

According to David Miller, immigration is not a human right. Conversely, Kieran Oberman makes a case for immigration as a human right. We agree with the latter view, but we show that its starting point is mistaken. Indeed, both Miller and Oberman discuss the right to immigration within the liberal paradigm: it is a right or not depending on the correct balance between the interests of the citizens of a given national state and the interests of th…

  • Racism, Interculturality, and Public Policies

    Open Access•David Martínez Rojas, Wilson Muñoz et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 25

In the last decades, Chile has become a receiving society of migrants, and this has overtaxed the social services in this country, among them the school system. According to the literature, the issue is that migration has not been addressed with a proper response from public policies. This article aims to examine recommendations for the development of these policies. To undertake this task, we have conducted a systematic review of the literature …

  • Cardiovascular mortality and risk behaviours by degree of urbanization before, during and after the economic crisis in Spain

Open Access•Almudena Moreno-Lostao, Juan Miguel Guerras et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The pattern of cardiovascular mortality by degree of urbanization was similar before and after the crisis, although in women the excess mortality in small urban areas with respect to large urban areas was smaller after the crisis. The different pattern of risk behaviours in men and women, according to area of residence, could explain these findings

  • Habermas’s discourse ethics and Hegel’s critique of Kant

    Open Access•David Martínez Rojas, David Martínez•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2018

In this article I follow James Gordon Finlayson who claims that a Hegelian criticism applies both to Kant and also to Habermas, namely, the criticism of the will as a tester of maxims. The issue is that Kant cannot connect the will of morality and the will of the particular agent and this leaves the empirical will unaffected. According to Finlayson, Habermas can be charged with this criticism, insofar as he draws a distinction between agent-neutr…

  • The role of population change in the increased economic differences in mortality

Open Access•David Martínez Rojas, David Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

The increase in the difference in premature mortality between the richest and poorest areas in Spain is due to the increased difference in cardiovascular mortality. This increase is not accounted for by population change. In rich countries, more empirical evidence is thus needed to test other alternative explanations for the increase in economic differences in mortality

  • Heterogeneity in the association between socioeconomic position in early life and adult self-rated health in two birth cohorts of Spanish adults

Enrique Regidor, Cruz Pascual et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 29

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this work was to evaluate the association between socioeconomic circumstances in early life and poor self-rated health in adulthood, and to determine whether this association varies depending on birth cohort. METHODS: Using data from the 2005 Living Conditions Survey carried out in a Spanish population sample, separate analyses were made for persons born between 1941 and 1959 who lived their childhood and adolescence in…

  • Re‐visioning the Hopi Fourth World

    Open Access•David Martínez Rojas, David Martínez•ARTICLE•Art History•2006

This article demonstrates, through an analysis of the work of Hopi‐Tewa artist Dan Namingha, that the discourse on contemporary American Indian art has moved beyond issues of ‘assimilation’. Whereas consideration of modern American Indian art has been limited to the ‘two‐world’ motif, in which indigenous artists had to make a choice between being ‘traditional’ or ‘progressive’, the paradigm today, it is argued, consists in ‘recovering’ and ‘revit…
