Examining Trajectories of Alcohol and Tobacco Use in Canadian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Gender-Diverse Midlife and Older Adults with Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) Data
Lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) and transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) adults experience elevated alcohol and tobacco use relative to heterosexual and cisgender adults, yet longitudinal trajectories of these disparities in midlife and older adulthood remain underexplored. Using data from the first three waves of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA; N = 45,079), we examined trajectories of drinking frequency, binge drinking frequency, sm…
Community Agency Health Promotion Capacity for Ethno-Culturally Diverse Immigrant Women
High rates of international migration must be addressed by healthcare systems. In particular, immigrant women lack access to and quality of care. Community-based health promotion may be one way to reach immigrant women. The aim of this study was to explore the capacity of immigrant settlement agencies for health promotion to immigrant women. We conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with immigrant women and community agency managers to di…
Advancing Access to Quality LGBTQIA+ Health Care
Recent research highlights the lack of knowledge and reduced skills of health care professionals in communicating with people from the LGBTQIA+ community. This often occurs due to reduced continuing education on social issues in the health sector. The purpose of this research was to study the readiness of health care professionals to manage the social and mental health issues of the LGBTQIA+ community. In particular, the cultural competence of he…
The Art of Scientific Observation
We explore a facet of the scientific method of the Nobel Laureate Barbara McClintock through an artistic process. McClintock’s key scientific insights that she coined the ‘breakage-fusion-bridge cycle’, rest on her observation of maize kernel colors and forms together with the spatial arrangement of chromosomes. These intriguing studies motivated the art project ‘break-fusion-bridge-cycle’ to highlight the role of visual observation in discovery.…
Health and lifespan of Swiss men born in an alpine region in 1905–1907
Body height and body mass index (BMI) are associated with later life outcomes in present and historical populations. We examine the case study of the Swiss Alpine canton of Glarus, which was highly industrialised at the beginning of the 20th century. Our study links conscription registers to genealogical registers at the individual level in Switzerland for the first time. We analyse whether body height, BMI, socioeconomic position (HISCLASS), reg…
Sexual Dysfunction in Gay and Bisexual Prostate Cancer Survivors
Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of prostate cancer (PCa) treatment, yet it remains poorly defined in the literature. Current definitions are based on heteronormative assumptions which do not consider the unique experiences of gay and bisexual (GBM) PCa survivors. The purpose of this paper is to use Walker and Avant's method to conduct a concept analysis of sexual dysfunction among GBM in the context of PCa survivorship. The review incl…
Primary Care for Transgender Individuals
Literature related to transgender health in adults has focused on definitions, hormone therapy, and transgender-sensitive care provision. Further understanding is needed on the delivery of primary care for transgender adults. The aim of this review was to understand the primary-care needs and access to health care services for transgender adults in Canada. A state-of-the-art literature review was conducted. Thirteen research studies were included…
