  • Settlement and Landscape Transformations in the Khaybar Oasis From Late Antiquity to the Late Islamic Period

Open Access•Stephen McPhillips, Guillaume Chung-To et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2026

Archaeological survey and targeted soundings by the Khaybar Longue Durée Archaeological Project ( Khaybar LDAP ) have provided the opportunity to reconstruct a first overview of settlement dynamics, land use and socioeconomic organisation from the late pre‐Islamic period through the subsequent centuries of Islamic rule in the Khaybar oasis, northwestern Arabia. The chronological model we advance, informed by radiocarbon evidence and extensive rem…

  • New Insights Into Early Islamic Hydro‐Agricultural Strategies in Northwest Arabia

Open Access•Bruno Depreux, Munirah Almushawh et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2025•References: 2

The Sadd al‐Bint is one of the largest known ancient dams in Saudi Arabia, and yet, its construction date, function and collapse remained uncertain. This study presents the first numerical chronology for the dam, integrating radiocarbon dating, Bayesian modelling, geomorphological analysis and hydrological modelling to reconstruct its history. Results indicate a multiphase construction, with initial building between 596 and 686 CE , followed by r…

  • Ceramic Production at the Khaybar Walled Oasis During the Mid/Late Third–Early Second Millennium BCE

Open Access•Shadi Shabo, Guillaume Charloux et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The knowledge of Early and Middle Bronze Age ceramics in Northwest Arabia remains limited, particularly in the Medina region, due to the scarcity of archaeological contexts dated to the fourth–first half of the second millennium BCE . Recent research in the Khaybar oasis has revealed significant Bronze Age occupation. Since 2021, the Khaybar Longue Durée Archaeological Project (Khaybar LDAP ) has dedicated substantial efforts to analysing and cha…

  • Early Arabian Neolithic agropastoral communities from Asifir, Northwestern Saudi Arabia

    Open Access•Rémy Crassard, Y H Hilbert et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 68

Discovered during the survey of ancient Madyan, in the modern Al-Bad' oasis in north-western Saudi Arabia, the site of Asifir is distinguished by numerous surface concentrations of Neolithic artefacts. Low sediment mounds identified at the site indicated the possible preservation of in situ archaeological remains; one such mound was excavated in November 2019. Dated to the Early Arabian Neolithic period, Asifir is an open-air site located at the …

  • The ramparts of Khaybar. Multiproxy investigation for reconstructing a Bronze Age walled oasis in Northwest Arabia

Open Access•Guillaume Charloux, Shadi Shabo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•References: 10

The multidisciplinary investigation carried out between 2020 and 2023 by the Khaybar Longue Durée Archaeological Project (CNRS-RCU-AFALULA) demonstrates that the Khaybar Oasis was entirely enclosed by a rampart in pre-Islamic times, like several other large regional walled oases in north-western Arabia (Tayma, Qurayyah, Hait, etc.). The cross-referencing of survey and remote sensing data, architectural examinations and the dating of stratified co…

  • First contribution of the excavation and chronostratigraphic study of the Ruways 1 Neolithic shell midden (Oman) in terms of Neolithisation, palaeoeconomy, social‐environmental interactions and site f…

    Open Access•Jean‐francois Berger, Raphaelle Guilbert-Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 14

The NeoArabia project tries to understand how environmental, social, economic and technological factors work in concert to influence settlement and abandonment along a latitudinal transect of 1200 km from UAE to southern Oman. This region was affected by wide north–south variations in the Indo‐Arabian monsoon, marine upwelling activity and eustatic variations in the Mid‐Holocene. On the local settlement scale, this transect is based on fine strat…

  • Geoarchaeology and chronostratigraphy of the Lac du Puy intraurban protohistoric wetland, Corent, France

    Open Access•Alfredo Mayoral, Jean‐luc Peiry et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This paper presents the first results of the geoarchaeological study of an unusual hilltop wetland, located within the protohistoric proto‐urban site of Corent in the French Massif Central. This small depression offers an exceptionally local sedimentary record that provided valuable data on long‐term human–environment interactions, as well as proto‐urbanization of the first millennium B.C.E. Field survey revealed a major archaeological discovery:…
