  • A Little Noticed Synchronism in Livy and the Working Methods of the Annalists

    Open Access•R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•Klio•2012•Cited by: 1

Livy (IV, 29, 8) rejects a synchronism found in his sources which referred events of his Varronian year 431 to 409 (the Carthaginian invasion of Sicily in that year). This crux illustrates the degree to which personalities and events of the Early Roman Republic floated without secure chronological foundations. In actuality the history of the first 140 years of the Republic, as we find it in Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus to the extent his wo…

  • Who Were the Tribuni Militum Consulari Potestate

    R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•L antiquité classique•2008

This article argues that the colleges of Tribuni Militum Consulari Potestate, which in the surviving histories of the early Roman Republic largely replaced the consulship during the period 444 to 367 B. C., are inventions of the Roman annalists. The members of these colleges were leaders of private war bands dignified by the title tribuni militum, whose commands, the annalists reasoned, gave them consular powers. The sources of this information w…

    R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2006•References: 7

Dating from about 470 B.C., the frescoes of the Tomba del Tuffatore (Tomb of the Diver) at Paestum are the only example of Greek wall painting with figured scenes from the Orientalizing, Archaic, or Classical periods to survive in their entirety. Close examination of the paintings shows the working practices of the artists. Technically these are similar to those of the painters of Etruscan tombs of the period. There is a world of difference, howe…

  • Constantine and Rome

    R Ross Holloway•BOOK•Constantine and Rome•2004

"Constantine the Great (285-337) played a crucial role in mediating between the pagan, imperial past of the city of Rome, which he conquered in 312, and its future as a Christian capital. In this book, R. Ross Holloway draws on archaeological evidence to examine Constantine's remarkable building program in Rome, describing a cityscape that was at once Christian and pagan, mirroring the personality of its ruler." "Holloway begins by examining the …

  • The non-fraud of the Middle Bronze Age stone goddess from Ustica: A reverse Piltdown hoax

    Open Access•Susan S Lukesh, R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2002

The authors examine claims that the sole surviving example of relief sculpture from the Middle Bronze of Italy or Sicily, discovered in the excavations on the island of Ustica in 1991, is a forgery that was deliberately planted on the site. Their refutation is based on examination of the photographic evidence that has been published in support of these claims

Open Access•R Ross Holloway, R Ross Holloway Holloway•ARTICLE•Revista do Museu de Arqueologia e…•1993

In this article the Autor advances a new interpretation for the archaic temple discovered beneath the twin shrines of Fortuna and Mater Matuta in the Forum Boarium. Analysing Colini’s (the excavator’s) interpretation by which this temple is assumed to be a temple of Mater Matuta, he shows us how this assumption is based in scanty and indirect evidence. Even so, it is accepted by specialists as a real dogma. Comparing the statuary group connected …

  • Why Korai

    Open Access•R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•1992•References: 10

The predominance of the standing female figure, the kore, among the archaic statuary of the Athenian Acropolis (more than half of the documented statues or groups) is well known. But what motivated this preference? the inscriptions from the bases and supports for the archaic dedications of the Acropolis provide a means of answering this question if one assumes that the survival of dedicatory inscriptions is no less random than that of the statues…

  • Koine and commerce in the Sicilian Bronze age

    R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Historical Review•1990•References: 4

Sicilian relations with the eastern Mediterranean after 1500 BCE are well known. This article is devoted to the preceding centuries, when economic patterns developed that formed the background for the extended relations to come. Fundamental to the character of Sicily and her Tyrrhenian neighbours in the Early Bronze Age were geographical areas showing reciprocal influences between neighbouring cultural units. At the same time the Sicilians were r…

  • The Idea of a Town: The Anthropology of Urban Form in Rome, Italy and the Ancient World. By Joseph Rykwert

    Open Access•R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1977•Cited by: 37

Roman towns and their history are generally regarded as being the preserve of the archaeologist or the economic historian. In this famous, unusual and radical book which touches on such disparate themes as psychology and urban architecture, Joseph Rykwert has considered them as works of art. His starting point is the mythical, historical and ritual texts in which their foundation is recounted rather than the excavated remains, such texts having p…

  • Excavations at Morgantina, 1980-1985: Preliminary Report XII

Malcolm Bell, R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1988•Cited by: 4

The primary objective at Morgantina in the period 1980–1985 has been publication of the results of excavations initiated at the site in 1955. Recent excavation has been concentrated in the agora of the Classical and Hellenistic city. The orthogonal city plan now appears to belong to the middle years of the fifth century B.C. New dating evidence argues that a major building program was begun in the second quarter of the third century B.C., when Mo…

    R Ross Holloway•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1986•Cited by: 3

The iconography of the Tomb of the Bulls at Tarquinia is discussed, emphasizing the importance of elements intended to protect against the Evil Eye. Recognition is also made of the portrayal of sacrifice in the Troilos scene and of allusions to the voyage of the dead to the underworld in other elements of the decoration

The emphasis of the following report is in the integration of archaeological material, especially the statistical study of abundant pottery material from three distinct stratigraphic phases of the site, and the discussion of the unexpected rectangularly p…
