  • Variation in ancient Maya governance: A long-term perspective from the central palace at Yaxnohcah, Mexico

    Open Access•F Kupprat, Kathryn Reese-Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2025•References: 36

Archaeology has seen a recent reemergence of interest in ancient forms of governance and variations in political institutions across time and space. While studies of ancient Maya politics have frequently assumed a unified political system, an increasing pool of data suggests that there was in fact a high degree of variability regarding governance and political practice. Here we discuss changes in rulership and power relations from the perspective…

  • The Development of Landesque Capital in the Maya Lowlands During the Middle Preclassic

    Open Access•Kathryn Reese-Taylor, Verónica A Vázquez López et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2022•Cited by: 3

In this article, we argue that landesque capital was integral to the development of complexity in the Maya Lowlands. Such features involved permanent investments in the landscape that supported material and ideological practices, resulting in increased sustainability and well-being. We contend that these developments stemmed from accretional modifications to soils in the Preceramic/Early Preclassic, as well as intentional investments of labor in …

During the Middle (1000-400 BC) and Late (400 BC-AD 200) Preclassic periods, Yaxnohcah was an extensive settlement containing more than 15 civic-ceremonial complexes spread over 40 km2. Our research focuses on one of the principal peri-urban nodes known as the Grazia Complex, which consists of a monumental platform featuring a triadic group, a ballcourt, and other minor structures. Excavations revealed several construction phases, as well as the …

This study focuses on the identification of Maya neighborhood marketplaces during the Late/Terminal Classic period (550-900 CE) in the urban landscape of Yaxnohcah, Campeche, Mexico. We use a configurational and contextual approach to identify four marketplaces that are situated in a strategic inner ring 1.5-2.5 km from the epicenter of the city. Physical features of the marketplaces include a plaza area of 2000-3100 m2, low perimeter platforms s…

  • The lowland Maya settlement landscape: Environmental LiDAR and ecology

    Open Access•Winnie Schröder, Timothy M Murtha et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 52

This paper presents the archaeological evaluation of 458 tiles of LiDAR collected by environmental scientists over southern Mexico using the G-LiHT system of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Specifically, this article describes the results of a full processing, inspection, and annotation of these data for the identification and baseline analysis of archaeological features. In this paper, we: 1) introduce the dataset and describe our efforts to…

    Open Access•Kathryn Reese-Taylor, Alma A Hernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2016•Cited by: 16•References: 10

This study proposes a sampling method for ground-truthing LiDAR-derived data that will allow researchers to verify or predict the accuracy of results over a large area. Our case study is focused on a 24 km 2 area centered on the site of Yaxnohcah in the Yucatan Peninsula. This area is characterized by a variety of dense tropical rainforest and wetland vegetation zones with limited road and trail access. Twenty-one 100 x 100 m blocks were selected…

    Open Access•William J Folan, Alma A Hernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2009•Cited by: 14•References: 15

Coba represents a major Classic period Maya urban center. Archaeological investigations have suggested a complex socioeconomic integration apparent in the heterogeneity of the size, shape, and quality of architecture while demonstrating a clear demarcation between commoner and elite compounds in addition to a complex system of raised roads (sacbeob). Results of the 1974–1976 mapping efforts at Coba revealed a generalized concentric settlement pat…

  • Strategic Location and Territorial Integrity: The Role of Subsidiary Sites in the Classic Maya Kingdoms of the Upper Usumacinta Region

    Open Access•Alma A Hernandez, Armando Anaya Hernández•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2006•References: 6

The Upper Usumacinta region was the scene of an intense interaction between the different kingdoms of the Classic Maya Period. This interaction took the form of political and marriage alliances as well as warfare and is well attested in the inscribed monuments of the region, especially towards the Late Classic Period (c. AD 600-900). Through this interaction the Maya rulers would not only assert their claim to power but also ensure the boundaries…

The ancient Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions of the upper Usumacinta region record an intensive interaction that took place among its regional capitals. The precise geographic locations of some of these sites are presently unknown. Through the application of the Gravity Model within the framework of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), we present the probable locations and possible territorial extents of a few of these: Sak Tz'i', Hix-Witz, and th…
