Generations of Pushkinists have marveled at the writer's adroitness in adopting literary personae appropriate to a wide range of genres. One cannot view Pushkin's so-called travel notes as a draft for the Journey to Arzrum, which he had yet to conceive. However, Pushkin was able to create the Journey only because he kept a diary during his 1829 trip through the Caucasus.
