  • Two Careers across Two Cultures

    Martin Rudwick, Martin J S Rudwick•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2016

Beginning with my recollection of hearing C. P. Snow's ‘Two Cultures’ lecture, I sketch my experience of building two academic careers in succession, first in one of the natural sciences and later in the history of such sciences. I outline both the difficulties and the rewards that I encountered in crossing the alleged gulf between the sciences and the humanities, but also emphasise the diversity of cultures that I experienced within each. I desc…

Geology is a science in which fieldwork is a central element of practice, not least because so many important geological features are not mobile. At least in the past, geological expeditions involved a double movement from the familiar to the unfamiliar and back again — not only in terms of features seen and studied, but also in terms of separation from and reintegration into the `home' scientific community. The dynamics of this process are here …

In his survey of The Organisation of Science England, Donald. Cardwell describes how the foundation of University College London in 1826, closely followed, by that of King’s College in 1828, reflects the polarization between Radical-Dissent and Anglican-Tory groups among those concerned with the promotion of middle-class higher education in the metropolis (1). He points out, however, that while the teaching staff (but not the students) at King’s …
