  • Reflections on mineral exploration, mining and environment through people's attachments and sense of place in Northern Finland

Open Access•Sanna Ojalammi, Ossi Kotavaara et al.•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2026•References: 11

  • Utilizing mobile phone tracking data to estimate Intra-City modal mobility

    Open Access•Marton Magyar, Terhi Ala‐Hulkko et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2025•References: 3

Understanding sustainable and active mobility in urban areas is essential for promoting healthier, low-carbon city planning. While previous research has utilized a wide range of data sources and spatial scales, there has been minimal focus on modal detection within urban areas. This analysis utilizes mobile phone tracking data to estimate travel modes and analyse modal mobility patterns at the intra-urban scale in Finland's Greater Helsinki regio…

  • Gender Gap in Entrepreneurial Potential in Finland and Reflecting Its Underlying Causes

Open Access•Martti Saarela, Pauliina Björk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Northern Studies•2024

The gender gap in entrepreneurship is a widely recognized phenomenon meaning that women are less likely to start a business than men. However, increased gender equality is believed to remove barriers to female entrepreneurship. We used secondary data collected for Global Entrepreneurship Monitor from 2003, 2009, 2015, and 2021 to get closer to this phenomenon in Finland, one of the most equal countries in the world. The aim of the study was to cl…

  • Geographical accessibility to primary health care in Finland – Grid-based multimodal assessment

Open Access•Ossi Kotavaara, Aleksi Nivala et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2021

Geographic accessibility of health services is one of the key dimensions affecting health care access, utilisation and may impact population health. We analysed countrywide space-time accessibility to primary health services by private car and multimodal walk-ride-walk travel chains of public transport in Finland. The analysis utilises register-based population grid cell data at 250m × 250 m resolution, road network with scheduled public transpor…

  • University graduate migration in Finland

Open Access•Niina Kotavaara, Ossi Kotavaara et al.•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 1

  • Scale in the effect of accessibility on population change

    Open Access•Ossi Kotavaara, Harri Antikainen et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2012•References: 33

The matter of scale is often ignored when analysing accessibility and its effects on population change. While accessibility has a concentrating effect on the activities of society on a regional scale, it also has a decentralising effect within urban areas in developed countries, including Finland. Population change is the outcome of numerous individual location choices. However, the scale on which these choices form a pattern related to transport…

  • Population change and accessibility by road and rail networks

  • Urbanization and Transportation in Finland, 1880-1970

Ossi Kotavaara, Harri Antikainen et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Analysis based on historical geographical information systems (hgis) databases can be used to trace the relationship between railway infrastructure and population change in Finland from 1880 to 1970. The use of accessibility calculations, statistical analyses, and gis reveals that Finland's population was almost evenly distributed in 1880, when railway development began, but that immigration to cities was well underway by 1970, when motorization …

  • Using GIS tools to estimate CO2 emissions related to the accessibility of large retail stores in the Oulu region, Finland
