Latinxs and Racial Frames
I leverage the case of Nuevomexicanos, New Mexico's long-standing Mexican American population, to extend our understanding of how legacies of Spanish and American conquest-that is, double colonization-can inform Latinxs' understandings of discrimination and race. I show that while most Nuevomexicanos reported experiences with discrimination, they often minimized their racialized experiences because such instances were incompatible with the idea t…

Borrowing from scholarship on culture and cognition, we use the concept of schema to examine how 36 Latinx young adults make sense of a changing racial terrain that defies their racial understandings. During the Obama years, Latinxs doubted or made allowances for the discrimination they experienced beca…
Mexican Americans and wealth
We examine the effect of economic, family, and metropolitan area characteristics on Mexican Americans’ wealth outcomes. We use data from the Mexican American Study Project, a data set that allows us to examine longitudinal and intergenerational change. We find that Mexican Americans have one main source of wealth – home equity. Moreover, length of marriage among parent respondents was key for their wealth accumulation, while education and income …

Existing research inadequately addresses the variation in Mexican Americans' patterns of ethnic identification. Drawing on 78 interviews, I address this question by exploring how conceptions of ancestry and nationality shape ethnic identification among New Mexico's long-standing Mexican American population, Nuevomexicanos. I find that Nuevomexicanos emphasized their ties to Spanish heritage within the history of New Mexico to explain their ethnic…
