Israel's Zionist Left and “The Day of the Land”
The Israeli Zionist Left does not exist as a clearly bounded and identifiable category; it is a label under which various groups and individuals in the Israeli political spectrum may be conveniently grouped. The best known of these bodies are: Mapam (especially its left wing), Moked, Yaad (now defunct), the Independent Liberals Party, the New Outlook enterprise, and the Council for Israel-Palestine Peace. Various individuals, mainly at academic i…
Israeli Arabists
Eminent Domain
The outcome of land-use policies of two distinct nations with considerably different formal governmental structures are exploratively compared and found to be quite similar. In the United States we focus on the effects—on the poor and minorities residing in central cities—of the urban renewal program conceived at the national level but implemented in a decentralized way, with most authority remaining at the local level. In Israel we focus on the …

Issues in the Ethics of Research Method
There is a pattern of elements within the Anglo-American structure of thinking and reasoning which affects methods of data collection, data analysis, and systems of information dispersion with respect to studies of non-Western cultures. An argument is built in this paper which maintains that: (1) These same elements hinder some Anglo-American anthropologists from studying their own cultures. They form a pattern which begins with the selection of …
Bride-Price Reconsidered [and Comments]
A revised consideration of bride-price and dowry is presented. Marriage payments are viewed as status symbols and mechanisms of fluidity relating to stratification systems. An inability to carry out exchange "in kind" (i.e., bride for bride) appears in cases of marriage between groups of different status and is shaped by cultural principles of stratification. The phenomena of hypergamy, hypogamy, and isogamy, along with different exchange currenc…
The direction of local-level conflict in two Arab villages in Israel
This paper focuses on intracommunity conflict. I argue that there has been a change from corporate-based to faction-based conflict as a result of changes in the political and economic environment of Arab villages in Israel and the policy of the Israeli regime

The Primitive Norm and Its Evolution [and Comments]
Different views exist as to the character of the social norms operating in primitive society. Marxist science defines them as moral norms, customary law, or customs. Non-Marxist science regards them for the most part as law. Theoretical analysis demonstrates, however, that these definitions are either inaccurate or insufficient. In fact, the obligatory rules of conduct in primitive society were undifferentiated; they combined features of both mor…
