  • The Political Economy of Indian Indentured Labor in the Nineteenth Century

Open Access•Neha Hui, Uma Kambhampati•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2025

Abolition of slavery in British colonies led to the facilitation of Indian indentured migration by the British government. This form of migration came about when the discourse of economic freedom and individual liberty strongly resonated in British political economy circles, following the work of Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill. We analyze how unfreedom in indentured labor was rationalized when the rhetoric of freedom was essential to the dominan…

  • Patriarchy and the Pandemic

    Garikipati, Neha Hui et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2025•References: 14

Unpaid housework done by men and women in dual-earner households goes to the heart of gender inequality. We explore this issue for urban India during the COVID-19 lockdown when work from home spiked and housework increased. We examine the extent to which women’s responsibility for housework and help given by partners changed during lockdown and any systematic differences in chores done by men and women. We conceptualize and empirically measure ba…

However, despite this guaranteed and subsidized return passage, only about a third of the workers returned to India. In this article, we consider the role of caste in the decision to return h…

  • Stigma and Labour Market Outcomes

Neha Hui, Uma S Kambhampati et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2020

In this paper, we examine whether the earnings of sex workers in India are significantly different from those in domestic work, a trade that is also gendered in nature and can be done with similarly low levels of training and education. We analyse this using data collected during fieldwork in the cities of Kolkata and Delhi in India. Our results confirm that there is a significant difference in wages between the two groups of workers. We consider…

  • Bargaining Power and Indicators of Well-Being among Brothel-Based Sex Workers in India

    Neha Hui•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This study looks at determinants of bargaining power and well-being among women in sex work in India. Drawing on a questionnaire-based field survey of brothel-based sex workers from Delhi and Kolkata carried out between June and December 2013, it uses the capabilities approach to understand individual, occupational, and institutional determinants of bargaining power and well-being. The study considers bargaining power to be a latent, unobservable…
