    This article considers T. S. Eliot’s preoccupation with ‘the music of poetry’, a subject he addressed throughout his career. It was a certain ‘music’ to which the first readers of The Waste Land responded in the poem. This music, I argue, is not a matter of melodious sounds or acoustic mimicry. Rather, it is to be discerned in ‘a certain noise’ (Joseph Brodsky’s phrase), an underlying pulse. In order to examine this rhythmic prompt, I look at the…

Brown's intellectual orientation during the 1960s, a reorientation reflecting his newfound alliance with poets, and an internalization of a spirit of poetry that he explicitly derived from the heady atmosphere of the 1960s counterculture.     This essay considers the disappearance from the historical record of hundreds of American poets who published regularly in the first half of the twentieth century. Since a pedagogically oriented canon emerged in 1950, scholars have assumed that a small number of established figures were sufficient to assess the state of American poetry, but historical research reveals an unsuspected and uncharted world.
