Obituary, W. Raymond Wood, 1931–2020
Alfred W. Bowers' History of the Mandan and Hidatsa
Alfred W. Bowers' work epitomized the direct historical approach in Plains anthropology. Bowers integrated archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnology in his studies of the tribes of the Middle Missouri subarea. Yet his archaeological and historical research and interpretations have not been widely recognized. Bowers' 1948 dissertation, A History of the Mandan and Hidatsa, and associated collections, have only recently become easily accessible. Bowe…
The River Basin Surveys Collections

The Sitting Rabbit 1907 Map of the Missouri River in North Dakota
The purpose of this paper is to place on record a Native American Indian map prepared by a Mandan Indian on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation between 1906 and 1907. The map, now in the collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, is painted on canvas 17.8 inches (45.5 cm) wide and 23.2 feet (7.07 m) long. With an 1892-1895 Missouri River Commission map as its model, the painted map depicts various natural and cultural features …
A Tentative Radiocarbon Chronology for the Middle Missouri Tradition
Chronology has long been a major concern of researchers in the Middle Missouri Subarea. However, the paucity of radiocarbon dates, as well as the general lack of multiple dates for many components, has hampered comprehensive assessment and interpretation of culture-historical sequences. A large number of radiocarbon dates pertaining to the Middle Missouri Tradition has become available over the last several years, and presently at least 124 dates…

Eleven radiocarbon dates from the Helb site (39CA208) in north-central South Dakota are presented and interpreted by techniques recently advanced by other authors. The results appear to substantiate two occupations of the site, one in the mid-eleventh century A.D. and anotherin the early or middle portion of the sixteenth century A.D
