Leadership Patterns in the Continental Congress: 1774-1789
In this paper we investigate patterns of leadership in the U.S. Continental Congresses of 1774 to 1789. We begin by exploring modern theory concerning the importance and role of leadership in recent and contemporary U.S. legislative settings. Both our interpretive historical and our empirical findings show that traditional bases of leadership power were largely absent in the Continental Congress.
